    Uganda was colonized by Great Britain in 1890 after signing treaties with Ugandan rulers. Great Britain took control of Uganda through these treaties and by sending armies to colonize the population. Uganda was ruled as a British colony for over 70 years, gaining independence on October 9, 1962. The British were involved in the independence process along with various Ugandan kingdoms. Uganda became an independent nation under a new constitution distributed powers between the central government and regions.
