Recap
In the previous class, we discussed

Construction procedures of

• Tiled flooring

• Mosaic flooring

Marbonite flooring
• Marbonite flooring is a type of artificial flooring which
resembles marble
• It has a very rich finish as Italian marble
• It is a vitrified tile
• Vitrified tile is a homogenous tile

9C406.37 4
Marbonite flooring

• Ceramic tile has only vitreous coating on its face

• Vitrified tile has uniform composition throughout

• Both faces have same texture and surface

• The cross section also has same texture unlike ceramic

tile

Construction of Marbonite flooring
• Method of laying tiled floor is similar to that of flag stone
flooring or tiled flooring

• Above the compacted hard soil base, 100-150mm

concrete base is laid with proper slope.

• Over this concrete base, a bedding mortar of (CM 1:3)

12-25mm thick is spread

9C406.37 7
Construction of Marbonite flooring

• Bedding is allowed to harden for 12-24 hours

• As a next step, cement slurry is spread using a brush or
trowel
• White cement is used instead of ordinary cement
• A thin layer of cement (in the form of paste) is applied all
along the sides of tile

9C406.37 8
Construction of marbonite flooring
• Tiles are placed on this cement slurry and are gently
tapped into bedding mortar with wooden mallet
• Cement that oozes (forced) out through joints due to
tapping is wiped clean .
• After one day Floor is to be cleaned in dry condition.

Advantages of Marbonite

• Marbonite is similar to marble tile

• It has smooth and beautiful finish

• Available in different colours

9C406.37 10
Advantages of marbonite

• Needs no grinding or polishing

• Easy to lay

• Easy to maintain

9C406.37 11
Advantages of marbonite

• Gives a pleasing appearance

• Tougher than ceramic tile

• Worn out tiles can be re-polished

9C406.37 12
Advantages of marbonite

• Both faces can be used as flooring

• No chipping of coating occurs

• Do not lose coating on continuous usage

9C406.37 13
Advantages of marbonite

• Has a lustrous appearance

• Sizes are big and need less joints

• Broken tiles are easily replaceable

• Scratch proof and non-slippery

9C406.37 14
Disadvantages of Marbonite

• Initial cost is very high

• Needs good maintenance

• Cannot withstand heavy loads

• Not suitable for public or industrial flooring

• Very smooth and slippery when wet, for

children and old people
