Deciduous Forest

By CJ Martin and Maximilian Veyne

Regions
Deciduous forests are a very prevalent biome in mid-latitude areas. They are
found in regions with moist summer and mild winters. This biome produces a
large amount of trees that lose their leaves each year. These regions include:

❖ Eastern United States of America

❖ Canada
❖ Central Europe
❖ China
❖ Russia
❖ Japan
❖ Chile and Paraguay
❖ Oceania
Physical Characteristics
Average yearly temperature ranges: -30°C to 30°C;
10°C is the yearly average

Average yearly precipitation: 75 – 150 cm

Soil description: As the leaves decompose after

Autumn, the nutrients contained in the leaves are
absorbed by the soil. For this reason, the soils of this
biome tend to be very fertile. Because this biome
has fertile soil and a long, 5 to 6 month, growing
season, many deciduous forests have been
converted into agricultural regions.
Vegetation Description
Deciduous forests are broken up into five zones.
The first zone is the tree stratum zone. It is the
Shrub
tallest zone broadleaf trees from 18 to 30 meters
tall. Maple, beeches, and oak trees are some
examples of trees found in this zone. The second Oak
zone is the small tree and sapling zone. Younger, Maple
shorter trees characterize this zone. The shrub
zone is the third zone. Shrubs include mountain Fern

laurel, huckleberries, and many others. The fourth

zone is the herb zone; it contains short herbal
plants such as fern. The ground zone is the final
zone where plants grow directly near the ground.
Some plants that grow here are lichens and Maple Mosses
Animal Life
The few large predators in the deciduous forest
include timber wolves, bears, mountain lions,
bobcats, and red foxes. Deer and moose are the
largest herbivorous mammals in the deciduous
forest, but smaller herbivores such as squirrels,
chipmunks and rabbits are common, as well as
Woodpeckers
omnivorous raccoons, skunks and possums. The
tree holes and branches provide a habitat for many
bird species, which mostly feed on seeds.
Woodpeckers, jays, and robins are common in the
biome. Because of the biome's cold winters, many
bird species migrate south for the season. Finally,
small insects live in the lower zones of deciduous Bears
