New NMSU Parking

Garage: Good or
Bad?

By:
Ashley, Memo, Roman, Rashed
Introduction
 The NMSU school population is starting to grow so the
debate of adding a parking garage is an upcoming
question.

- Size of garage
- Cost of parking permits
Hypothesis
 Building
a 500 car parking garage will increase the value of
NMSU and promote population growth while creating a
more central location for students to park near their classes.
Alleged parking availability according to NMSU Transportation & Parking Services:

Parking Spots

Taken Spots
41%
Available Spots
59% Total: 13,500
Population
 Allthe extra spaces are out in the open on top of campus.
With growth of the school population students may want to
feel there vehicles are in a safe location closer to class.

Size & Cost
 Average parking garage is 145,000 square feet. This is
approximately 5 stories.
 Average cost of a garage this size: $12 million
 1 acre floor plan can be designed with approximately 150
spaces per level and traffic lanes 24 feet wide.

With a new 5 story garage approximately 500 spaces will be

added to NMSU’s 13,500 totaling 14,000 parking spaces.
Methodology
 Compared relevant studies of the size and costs at other
universities.
 We used the internet to find general information
 Blogs, News articles, and statistics
 Wealso searched popular opinion on parking and parking
garages on different campuses
 Interviews, Parking information from different campuses
 Then we needed credible sources from reliable authors
 Journals, Articles
Results & Conclusion
 There have been plans to build a garage in the past.

 There ARE spots available, but they’re not ideal.

Future Suggestions
 Wesupport the addition of
a parking garage on
campus.

 We believe that
building a garage in this
general area of
campus would be the
most ideal
