forms in response to a choice of briefs set by WJEC.

Component 3 offers you exciting opportunities to:

• Develop media production skills

• Become active creators of meaning

• Respond to a choice of set briefs in a range of forms

• Apply their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework to the creation of media
forms and products.
Component 3: Key Features

Intentions
Briefs

• Briefs will be released annually by Eduqas, requiring learners to create a specific production for a
different industry context and intended audience.

• The following forms will always be set:


• television
• advertising & marketing (music or film)
• magazines

• Eduqas will stipulate the industry and audience contexts, and specific key requirements to be
included in the production.

• Learners will develop a response to their chosen brief and create a production for the the specified
industry context and intended audience.
The following forms will always be set:

A level Cross-media Production


Television A cross-media production: a sequence from a new television programme and
related print or online products.

Advertising & Marketing A cross-media production: a print marketing campaign for a new film, and
(Film) * related audio-visual or online products.

Advertising & Marketing A cross-media production: an original music video for a new artist or band
(Music) and related print or online products.

Magazine A cross-media production: a new print magazine and related audio-visual or


online products.

* Film production work must not include a complete short film, film sequence or trailer.
Key Requirements for Component 3

• Learners must submit:


• A cross-media (A level) production.
• A statement of aims and intentions for the production.
• A completed cover sheet.

• Supervision and monitoring:


• teachers may advise on completion of non-assessed research and planning
• once production is underway feedback must be general - specific advice regarding
elements such as the creative ideas or the application of the theoretical framework is not
permitted
• teachers monitor production process continually and sign at three key stages (research,
planning, production) to authenticate the work.
Key Requirements for Component 3

• Individual production: the learner may use unassessed students and others:
• to appear in their media products e.g. as actors or models or to operate equipment, e.g.
lighting or sound recording equipment, under the direction of the assessed learner.

• Use of original material:


• learners must create original material for the production. A small amount of non-original
material may be used (see specific guidance in specification)
• a production that does not use original material cannot be awarded above band 1.

• Equipment and resources for production work in Component 3:


• software packages used in the creation of the production must be listed on the cover
sheet with a brief explanation of how they have been used

AO3: Create media products for an intended audience, applying knowledge and understanding of
the theoretical framework of media to communicate meaning.

Component 3 is internally assessed and externally moderated. The total number of marks available is 60:

• 10 marks for the statement of aims.

• 20 marks for creating a media product that meets the requirements of the set brief, including suitability
for the specified form, industry and audience.

• 30 marks for creating a media product which uses media language to communicate meanings and
construct representations.

Learners who do not submit a production will be awarded zero marks for the statement of aims.

Media Production Briefs

Select ONE brief from the following four options. You must complete Task 1 and Task 2: Option
(a) or (b) for your chosen brief.

BRIEF 1: Television A cross-media production for a new television programme in a factual or


fictional genre (or sub-genre/hybrid) of your choice.

Task 1: Audio-Visual Create a sequence from one of the following points in the
narrative/structure of your new television programme: a key turning point, a point of
significant conflict, a resolution. Length: 2 minutes 30 seconds - 3 minutes.

AND: Task 2: a) Online* Create a new functioning website or


b) Print Create a front cover and double page spread feature article to
publicise your television programme in a new lifestyle magazine.

BRIEF 2: Magazines A cross-media production for a new monthly lifestyle magazine in a genre
(or sub-genre) of your choice.

Task 1: Print Create two original front covers and a double page feature article for your
new magazine. The front covers should be for different editions of the same magazine,
for example a summer and winter edition. Length: 4 pages.

AND: Task 2: a) Online* Create a new functioning website, to include a working


homepage and one linked page, to promote your magazine to its target
audience.OR:
b) Audio-Visual Create a sequence from a new mainstream radio or
television news, current affairs or chat programme to publicise the
launch of your magazine to its target audience.

BRIEF 3: Film Marketing A cross-media production to market and promote a new film in a genre
(or subgenre/hybrid) of your choice. Create print marketing materials for a new film and
associated audio/audiovisual or online material to promote the same film.

Task 1: Print Create a DVD or Blu-ray front and back cover and two posters for
theatrical release in different countries promote your new film.

AND: Task 2: a) Online* Create a new functioning website, to include a working


homepage and one linked page, to promote your film to its target
audience. OR
b) Audio-Visual A sequence from a new mainstream radio or television
news, current affairs or chat programme to promote your film to its
target audience.

BRIEF 4: Music Marketing A cross-media production for a new artist or band in a genre (or
subgenre/hybrid) of your choice. Create an original music video and associated print or online
material to promote the same artist or band.

Task 1: Audio-Visual Create an original music video to promote your new artist or band.
Length: 3 - 3 ½ minutes. Longer tracks may be edited or faded out to meet the required
length. You may use an existing song for your music video (this does not need to be
copyright-free), but the song must not have an existing official music video.

AND: Task 2: a) Online* Create a new functioning website, to include a working


homepage and one linked page. OR
b) Print Create a front cover and double page feature article for a new
specialist culture magazine to promote your artist or band to the target
audience.
