    Fatty liver disease (FLD) is caused by a buildup of fat in the liver and can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic. It affects a significant portion of the general population and those with obesity or diabetes. The "two-hit hypothesis" proposes that fatty liver represents the first hit of fat accumulation, leaving the liver susceptible to a second hit of oxidative stress or toxins that leads to inflammation and fibrosis. Saturated fats may represent a stronger second hit than unsaturated fats, resulting in more liver damage through apoptosis and loss of hepatocyte mass.
