He founded the school of thought known as British Empiricism and made foundational contributions to theories of limited liberal government. His most important work was an "Essay Concerning Human Understanding" in which he argued that the mind at birth is a blank slate that develops through experience rather than innate ideas. The Essay had four books and examined the foundations of human knowledge and understanding.
