Fabrication Requirements

Sequence of Material Preparation

 Verify that material is acceptable for fabrication
 Verify that material is traceable and marked
properly
 Layout the material properly, if rolled, assure the
marking are on the outside
 Cut to shape and size, maintaining material
identification
 Removes burned edges
 Chamfer or round off exposed inside edges of
openings
 Clean the surfaces to be welded
Material Verification

 Material Inspection UG – 93
 UG-93 cover what is normally referred to as “ receiving
inspection”. It gives the requirement that must be met prior
to a material being used in fabrication, and include :
– Plate : an MTR or C o C as required be the material specification.
– Other product form : each piece must marked with the specification,
grade, type and class when the spec. cover such marking.
– Tubing may be identified by bundle
 AI shall must examines that MTR or CoC and verify that
the material is marked and identified as required by the
material specification and /or the quality control manual
Material Marking and Traceabilty
UG - 77
Fabricator must :
Maintained identification of the material until
vessel completed
May used coded marking
May record the required marking
Transfer any marking
Control of material during
Fabrication
 A Fabricator’s Quality Control Manual shall
describe his system for control of material
including all welding materials. And must
address :
– Storage
– Issue
– Examination
– Identification
– Repair
Forming Requirements
Forming operation shall not cause any adverse
changes to material properties.
– There can no flat spot along longitudinal joint
– Must meet circularity requirement of UG- 80/81
– Dimension and tolerances must meet the requirement of
the design
– Must include minimum thicknesss requirement after
forming
– Alignment tolerances for butt welded joint must be
maintained
Forming Carbon stell
 Cold forming by blows is not permitted
 Forming by blows is permitted if the material
is at the forging temperature and the
material is PWHT’d
 If part is cold forming by other, certification
to UCS-79 must be supplied by the part
manufacturer
Out of Roundness
UG - 80
 The maximum ID minus Minimum ID shall
not exceed 1 % of the nominal ID
 If the out of roundness measurement is
taken within one diameter of ID of a nozzle,
an additional 2 % of ID of the opening may
be added
