Introduction To Learning Styles

A Learning style is an individual's unique approach to learning based on

strengths, weaknesses, and preferences

An early approach states that there were three major cognitive learning styles

Visual

Auditory

Kinesthetic

What about the other type of learners?

Why is Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence
Theory important to us as educators?

"We have this myth that the only way to learn something is to read it in a
textbook or hear a lecture on it. And the only way to show that we've
understood something is to take a short-answer test or maybe
occasionally with an essay question thrown in. But that's nonsense.
Everything can be taught in more than one way." – Howard Gardner,
1997
Gardner’s Five Minds For the Future

The Disciplinary Mind: the mastery of major schools of thought, including science, math,
and history.
The Synthesizing Mind: the ability to integrate ideas from different disciplines or spheres
into a coherent whole and to communicate that integration to others.
The Creating Mind: the capacity to uncover and clarify new problems, questions and
phenomena.
The Respectful Mind: awareness of and appreciation for differences among human beings
and human groups.
The Ethical Mind: fulfillment of one’s responsibilities as a worker and a citizen.
