Genetics and Heredity

Learning Outcomes
TSWBAT understand the function of the different parts of a
cell, how a cell divides, and traits are passed from
generation to generation
Vocabulary
Genetics: The study of the way traits are passed on from the
parents to the offspring

Heredity: Characteristics that the child had from the parents


Cell Vocabulary
● Cell: Basic unit of all living things
● Cytoplasm:Substance between the nucleus and the cell
membrane
● Nucleus: “The brain” contains genetic information, the
control center
● Chromosomes:Carries genetic information in the nucleus
○ 46 chromosomes, 23 pairs
● Genes: Bands on chromosomes
Cell Division
Mitosis:The cell divides by copying DNA. The cell splits and
a new one with the correct number of chromosomes is there
(growth & repair)

Meiosis: The cell division that results in four daughter


cells
