Grammar: Comparatives
We use the comparative form of adjectives +
than to say how two people, things, places or
animals are different.

Rules:
1. Short adjectives (of one or two syllables)
form their comparatives by adding “-er”.
Example: Near - nearer
Mercury is nearer to the sun than Jupiter.
2. For adjectives that end in a short vowel
sound + consonant, we double the last
consonant before adding “-er”.
Example: Big – bigger
Saturn is bigger than Mars.

3. Long adjectives form their comparative with

“more”.
Example: Beautiful – more beautiful
Earth is more beautiful than Pluto.
4. For adjectives that end in “y”, change “y” to “I”
before adding “-er”.
Example: Heavy – heavier
Neptune is heavier than Mercury.

5. There are irregular adjectives. There is no

pattern here, so you’ll just have to remember
them. Fortunately there are only a few.
Good – better, bad – worse, far – farther
(further).
Example:
Pluto is farther from the sun than Mars.
