INTRODUCTION
 Air-conditioning is one of the major consumers of electrical
energy.
 The demand can be expected to increase because of changing
working times, increased comfort expectations and global
warming.
 solar air-conditioning might be a way to reduce the demand for
electricity.

3
 India is blessed with plenty of solar energy because most parts
of the country recieve bright sunshine throughout the year .
 The solar potrntial of india is about 748 GW .
 Till december 2014, total solar power capacity of india is 3063
MW .

4
SOLAR AIR CONDITIONING :
WHAT?
 Process of converting solar thermal (heat) energy into
conditioned air .
 Eco-friendly as well as energy-efficient .
 can be operated with green resources when solar radiation is
unavailable .

5
PROCESS:-
 When a liqiud/gas changes its state, it takes or extract heat .
 At lower pressure, state changes at lower temprature .
 Extraction of heat means cooling .
 gas gets compressed when heated .
 gaseous refrigerant compressed and then heated up in the
solar panel up to 90°c .

6
TYPES :-

 Photovoltaic (PV)
 Solar closed-loop vapour
absorption air-conditioning air-conditioning

7
 Direct current solar air-conditioning

8
SOLAR THERMAL COOLING
SYSTEM
 In this sysytem, water is used as the refrigerant while lithium
bromide ammonia is used as the absorbent .

 In this absorber the LiBr absorbs the water refrigerant, creating

a solution of water and LiBr .

 LiBr has great affinity for water vapour, however, when the
water-LiBr solution is formed , they are not complrtlry soluble
with each other .

9
 schematic layout of the system

10
PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR AIR
CONDITIONING
 It can be operated on both photovoltaic power only and
combination of photovoltaic power with grid power .
 A hybrid system combines photovoltaic technology with grid
power .
 It automaticaly switches between solar and battery power as
needed .
 When it's set to hybrid mode these systems change their
batteries when the sun is shining, when the system runs on
battery backup while charging its batteries via ac power .

11
INCLINATION OF SOLAR
PANELS
 The angle and dirction of installation will effect the efficiency of
the solar collector .
 As a general rule if you are in the northen hemisphere then the
collector should face south .
 The angle at which you mount the collecter should roughly
corespond to the lattitude of your location .

 Approx. 50% of total electricity is used in H.V.A.C in both the residential as well
as commercial
buildings.
8.
 By reducing in electrical load by 50% , it can cut 150 million tonnes of CO 2 by 2030.

13
MERITS
 Eco-Friendly

 Economic-saving

 Low Maintenance

 Government subsidy

 Energy-efficient

9. 14
DEMERITS
 Heavy Initial Investment
 Solar PV Air Conditioner 1.5 ton (1.5kw) Price: Rs. 1.5- 3.5 lakh.

 Approx. 3-7 times of conventional A.C unit.

 Large area requirement.

 For generating 1Kw, it requires 12 sq.m of roof area.

 For setting up a solar power plant of 1MW, it require 5 acres of land.

 Lack of Efficiency in Monsoon season

 Efficiency lacks if cloudy weather prolongs as intensity of sunlight don’t match
the requirement of solar panel.
