MARRIAGE T0 KHUNAIS • At the age of 18, Hafsah married a Companion of the Prophet called Khunais ibn Hudhaifah. • The couple migrated to Medina due to harsh oppression, and there they stayed in the house of Rafa'h bin 'Abdul Munthir as a guest. Hafsah and Khunais loved their new life in Medina. • Khunais ibn Hudhaifah fought heroically in the Battle of Uhud and the Muslims won, but Khuanais was badly wounded. To Hafsah’s sadness, her husband past away a few days later in the year 624 while she was just 21 years old. MARRIAGE TO THE PROPHET (PBUH) • Umar bin Khattab couldn’t bear to see his daughter so sad and lonely because of the death of Hafsah’s husband • So a short time after Khunais’s death, Umar offered Hafsah’s hand in marriage to Uthman bin Affan, but he said he was not planning on marriage. Umar then asked Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, who lowered his gaze and did not answer. • Umar became upset about this, and he told the Prophet (PBUH). Prophet Muhammad smiled and said: ‘Allah will marry Uthman to better than your daughter and will marry your daughter to better than Uthman.’ MARRIAGE TO THE PROPHET (PBUH) • Umar was happy to hear this, but also a little puzzled to who this man could be. A few days later, the Prophet’s daughter, Umm Kulthum, married Uthman, and Umar realized half of the Prophet’s statement had become true. But who could be a better man then Uthman? •Then, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) proposed to Hafsah. Umar was overjoyed! He could not believe it. Hafsah married the Prophet 3 years after Hijrah at the age of 22. • A scholar called Sa'id bin Al-Musayyab states that Prophet Muhammad’s prediction was right, that the Prophet was be a better husband than Uthman to Hafsah, and Umm Kulthum was a better wife than Hafsah to Uthman. MARRIAGE TO THE PROPHET (PBUH) • After the marriage, Abu Bakr told Umar the reason he stayed silent when Umar offered Hafsah’s hand in marriage was that the Prophet had told Abu Bakr that he planned to marry Harsha. If this was not the case, Abu Bakr would be more than happy to accept Hafsah’s hand in marriage. Umar expressed his happiness by quoting the following ayah: "This is by the Grace of my Lord - to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for himself; and whoever is ungrateful, (it is for the loss of only himself). Certainly my Lord is Rich, Bountiful." [Noble Quran 27:40] NOTABLE WORK • Hafsah was known to fast a lot and frequently perform salah in the night. •She is said to have narrated 60 hadith from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). •When Uthman became the Khalifah/Caliph, he used Hafsah’s copy when standardizing the Quran. •One day the Angel Jibril told Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about Hafsah: "She is an often fasting and worshipping lady and she will be your wife in Paradise too." [Mustadrak Al-Hakim 4/15] DEATH • Hafsah died 41 years after Hijrah at the age of 59. • Even during her last few days in the world, she was fasting, and she died fasting. •She was buried in al-Baqi (a cemetery in Medina) next to the other Mothers of the Believers.
