SAINT ROSE OF LIMA

WHO WAS SHE?

 She was born Isabel Flores de Olivia


 She was born on April 20th 1586
 She grew up in Lima, Peru
 One of 11 children
 She lived in a town that now has a chapel and is
called Santa Rosa de Quives
WHY HER NAME CHANGED

 She was originally born Isabel Flores, but her name


was later changed to Rose or Rosa. This is because
when she was first born. Her mother saw a rose
bloom upon Isabel’s face while she was sleeping. From
that day forward, she was known to her friends and
family as Rose.
 Eventually she became saddened of her new name
because to others it was a symbol of her beauty and
she didn’t like that. So, she decided that her name was
a symbol of a rose inside her rather than her outer
beauty.
 She officially took the name of Rose at her
confirmation in 1597
EARLY ADULT YEARS

 As Rose grew up, her physical appearance concerned her.


 Her beauty attracted many male suitors and Rose didn’t like that
 She decided to cut her hair off to die down her beauty. Even though her family was against her doing that.
 Her mother wanted to see her get married for the main reason of being able to marry into a wealthier family.
 To unattract men further, she began to rub her face with pepper and with lye (a strong alkaline solution)
WHEN SHE BECAME A NUN

 Rose had wanted to be a nun since she was young. She


would often pray and fast without her family knowing.
 Her family often argued with her when she told them
she wanted to be a nun. But eventually her father gave
in and gave her a room in the house to herself.
 She often stayed in her room for long periods of time
and didn’t come out. She would spend that silent time in
prayer.
 Some rumors say that she only spent 2 hours of the
night actually sleeping.
 When Rose was 20, she was permitted to join the Third
Order of St. Dominic
WHAT SHE DID

 Rose was inspired by the Saint Catherine of Sienna.


 She knew her special calling was to help the Indians and
evangelize them.
 Later, she devoted herself to works of charity
 Right before she died, she had set up a room in her house
to care for the elderly and sick and even the homeless
children
 She started social services in Peru
WHEN SHE DIED

 Rose died on August 24, 1617


 She was 31
 When she died she requested her body to be buried in the convent of St. Dominic’s.
 She was beatified on April 15, 1668
 Pope Clement IX canonized her a saint on April 2, 1671.
