Ray Howard
MISSOULA – A Change of Command. Any man who is 6 feet 8 inches tall with a stride over 40 inches
will find military marches and formations a challenge. Many would say that precision in drill or play
formation is the first prerequisite of military or athletic prowess. In truth, prowess arrives from a love and
joy of the game, the challenge of command and a deep care for one’s teammates, patients, troops and
family.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, Dr. Raymond Howard, a superb physician, Army officer, fisherman,
prankster and husband posted for his last formation. Raymond’s passing in Missoula, not far from the
Harry Adams Field House where he had moments of both victory and defeat, encompassed a life of
service in locations across the globe. Yet no location was as sweet as his beloved Missoula. No place
could equal his beloved cabin at Lake McDonald and no teammate or fellow soldier could ever equal or
surpass his love for his wife Molly.
Born in Great Falls on July 8, 1950, a love of basketball, size 15 EEE feet and a sweeping hook shot
destined Ray for a high school and college athletic career. A longtime holder of state scoring records,
Ray would smile and recall that some of those records were set in losing state title games. In recounting
memorable Grizzly games, Ray would recall coach Judd Heathcote quips regarding his somewhat less
than blazing speed. His love of the game was always tempered by his deep and abiding appreciation of
his teammates, friends and family. These traits and this balance would propel him forward into a life of
service to his nation, state and community.
Ray Howard (Page two)
Upon graduation from the University of Montana in 1972, Ray married Molly Harrison,
and together they would begin an adventure that would last until his passing. Following
commissioning as a United States Army officer and graduation form medical school in
Kirksville, Missouri, Ray and Molly began a 20-year career of military service spanning
three continents, multiple postings, and friends and colleagues spanning the globe.
A family practitioner who faced the challenges of emergency care crisis from Fort Lewis,
Washington, to Worms, Germany to Honduras, Central America, Ray perfected the
abilities that would continue to serve his community in Missoula upon retirement from
the Army as a full Colonel, USA Ret. But every consultation, from his career as an Army
physician to practice in Missoula would incorporate the smile and the quip that made
him beloved by his family, his troops and his community.
Raymond’s passing was preceded by the deaths of his father, Dr. Lester F. Howard, and
his mother, Louise Howard. He is succeeded by his wife and lifelong friend and partner,
Molly Howard; his brother, Les Howard; sisters Elaine Howard and Gayle (Lance)
Fowler; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the ICU staff at Community Medical Center for their
excellent care.
Ray’s passing will remind us all that joy comes in service,
that gentleness and humor propel us forward, and that
very tall people can march in formation – if not elegantly

MISSOULA – Charles Atley Medsker left us to start a new adventure on Monday, June 6, 2016.

Chuck
A life-long Montanan, he was born in Great Falls to Harold and Lillian Medsker on Sept. 29,
1950, and later lived in Billings, Lolo and Missoula.
He spent his childhood playing baseball, waterskiing on Holland Lake, and learned at an early
age that he was a great shot in both golf and marksmanship. Chuck was a proud veteran of the
U.S. Army, having served as a radio teletype operator and told countless stories of his time
spent on the Army golf team, playing courses throughout Europe. Chuck had a long career in
retail and service sales, from Labelle’s to Best to Temp Right Service. Diagnosed with multiple

Medsker
sclerosis in his 30s, he never let the terrible disease define or stop him.
Always an avid sportsman, Chuck was an all star baseball player, golfer, fisherman and hunter.
He was a dedicated Yankees fan, but watched all baseball with equal enthusiasm. He loved
movies and could repeat nearly every line of westerns like Lonesome Dove, Open Range and
Deadwood. He loved a good joke and was notorious for laughing so hard his face would turn
lobster red with rolling tears.
He most loved fishing with his best friends, Scott Clark and his wife Denise, annual hunting trips
to Wolf Creek, telling campfire stories, playing poker with the guys, and enjoying a few beers
with a snort of schnapps.Above all, Chuck’s proudest accomplishments were his children. He
spent many years of his life on Little League baseball fields and YMCA basketball courts as
coach.
Chuck is survived by four children, Lyndsey Medsker (Ryan Thomas) of Washington, D.C.,
Sydney (Mark) Helveston of Missoula, Kimberly Medsker-Mehalic (Matt Mehalic) of Falmouth,
Maine, and Charles Robert Medsker of Big Sky.
He was a great dad and an even more amazing grandpa. Chuck's legacy will forever live on
through his six grandsons, including three who were named after him. Atley and Finley Thomas;
Sawyer and Charles Helveston; Mason and Winston Charles Mehalic. In their too short of time
with Grandpa Chuck, he taught them important life lessons like how to win at checkers (he
never let them win), race a scooter, how to use a few choice words, bait a hook, shoot a BB
gun, and that the Yankees were the greatest team in baseball. His grandsons will treasure
every memory they made with Papa Chuck.
Chuck leaves behind his companion and close friend, Laura Short of Stevensville, his brother,
Harold Medsker and his sister, Marcia Medsker.A celebration of Chuck’s life will be held on
Thursday, July 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Missoula Brewing Company & Highlander Taphouse,
200 International Drive, where we will gather to share memories and toast to our dad, grandpa,
neighbor and friend. A headstone will be placed at the Western Montana State Veterans
Cemetery in Missoula.
A life-long hunter, memorial donations in his name can be sent to the Rocky Mountain Elk
Foundation, 5705 Grant Creek Road, Missoula, MT 59808.
SALEM - Philip Jackson Miles, 57, beloved husband, father, and friend passed away early Friday morning after
courageously battling cancer. His wife of 34 years, Jo Ann; daughter, Jackie; and son, Andy were at his side. He was born
and grew up in Great Falls, Montana, the child of Theron and Ruth Miles and attended local schools, graduating in 1968
Philip Miles from Great Falls High School.
Phil's father died when he was very young and subsequently Phil was guided as he grew up by his grandfather, Robert P.
Jackson, a country lawyer. Phil loved the "big sky" country of his home state and spent many happy hours crossing the
prairie on his motorcycle.
Responsible and caring from a young age, Phil looked after his ill mother for many years. In 1970, they had to move
away for her health and arrived in Eugene, Oregon. There Phil continued his education, receiving a Bachelor of Science
Degree from the University of Oregon in 1972, where he also met and married Jo Ann. Phil's interest in history led him
to work at the State Archives for ten years and eventually to hold the position of Records Analyst. In 1989 he became
Marion County Licensing and Records Supervisor and was appointed Chief Deputy County Clerk two years ago. He
actively participated in the Oregon Association of County Clerks. Between archives and clerk jobs, he triumphed over
tongue and throat cancer.
Phil had a contagious, irreverent sense of humor and never missed a chance to share jokes and laughter with others; on
the other hand, he was serious in tackling life's problems head on and was known for "telling it like it is." He was honest
and straightforward yet also gentle and kind.
Phil enjoyed a full life filled with family, friends, and beloved pets, and possessed many talents and a variety of interests.
He was unwavering in his quest of knowledge and read hundreds of history books and kept abreast of current events. He
loved listening to music and watching movies, working in the yard and around the house, exploring genealogy and
studying geology, but most of all, he loved being a Dad. He imparted his passion for music and talent in playing the
trumpet, to his son and his joy and ability in taking beautifui photographs, to his daughter. Most of all, his children
remember how he was never too tired to spend time with them and that he was always there for them. It gave him great
satisfaction to be able to help them get their college educations, and he was so very proud of them. It gave him great
pleasure to watch their lives unfoid.
Aside from his wife, Jo Ann of Salem; daughter, Jackie of Portland; and son, Andy of Port Orchard, Washington; Phil is
also survived by a half-brother, Benjamin Miles of Fountain, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents and
grandfather.

Dad, we know that you tried your best to stay with us but we are grateful for the time we had with you. We miss you and
love you always.

While living in Belt, Mike drove a school bus and worked as a police officer. To his last day, Mike told stories about all the
children he watched grow up on his bus routes and the Belt school activity trips he made. He took great pride in being
involved with his community. He was a dedicated member of the Belt Rural Fire Department, retiring from there in 2004.
Even after retirement, he would volunteer to man the base while everyone else attended to the call. He enjoyed working, on
and off, as a ranch hand throughout his life. In 1998, he moved out to the Sentinel Butte Ranch and worked until his legs
wouldn't let him anymore.
Mike enjoyed numerous outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and, in particular, gopher-hunting on the Dawson Ranch
with his buddy, Bill. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out at the Diamond, tossing back a Mist Ditch with John, and
his other "sons," Jeff, Chad, Dan, and JC. Always ready for a good time, he never forgot his fully stocked "survival kit."
He was preceded in death by his father, James Bliler; a grandmother, Josie Mason; a grandfather, John Mason; a
grandfather, Jake Bliler; and a grandmother, Katie Logan.
We will forever miss his love for his family and his community.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Belt Volunteer Fire Department, Belt, MT 59412.
