Bluemine Redesign As-IS DBMS Facts

Bluemine Redesign database is maintained in the IBM Coud BlueMix Environment Named as Db2 on Cloud or DashDB.
Bluemix hosting region: w3ibm:prod:us-south
Plan : Enterprise Plan which provides one database per service instance on a dedicated server.
The following are the features of DBMS offering :
• User level access to the database Schemas
• Connect interface to the Database from Browser as well as Remote db2 Client .
• Monitoring :
• Connection listing
• Database storage Monitoring at Table Level , Schema Level and Tablespace level
• REST API Support is available.

Limitations:
• No access to the Server File system on which Db2 is hosted .
• No Admin privileges to the DBMS system in order to perform fine grained tuning.
• As there is no access to the Server Filesystem Physical level database backup can not be retrieved and hence renders unavailable.
• As there are no physical Db backup images, Restore of the Db is also not available at physical level
• No possibility to setting up HADR for High Availability of the database
• Replication setup not possible for both queue or SQL [ as no access to server FS or Admin privileges to the DB]

Expectations from Db2 hosted. Risks and Mitigations

1. DB2 Hosted [DaaS] in Bluemix Cloud comes with a dedicated Db2 instance Configuration.

2. Allows full administration control of the DB and the Database Filesystem.

3. HADR can be setup both on cloud as well as off site which would make the Database Highly Available as the same would ensure
client Reroute.

Risks Impact Probability Impact Score Mitigation Plan

Of
occurrence
In Case DR is maintained in the 5 1 5 Maintain DR at off site from the cloud [on
Cloud, if cloud services go down premise]
DR too may go down disrupting
the DB availability

Expectations from Db2 on premise. Risks and Mitigations

1. Db2 on Premise will be completely separate Db installation away from the cloud and will guarantee Complete server management
including the planned outages.

2. Allows full administration control of the DB and the Database Filesystem.

3. HADR / Replication can be setup on a separate server which has to be procured with additional cost.

Cons:
1. Server and DB Patching activities has to be managed completely by the team. Which would pose an added overhead to the tasks.
2. Cost of ownership and Maintenance will be higher.
3. Both the H/W and S/W maintenance has to be done by the team.

Backup and Recovery Facts for the As – Is Redesign DasDB

As there is no possibility for retrieving the db2 physical [DB level ] online/ offline backup. Support is performing logical export backups
at the schema level on a remote system. Following are the facts for the same :
• Backup size 2.4 GB
• Current backup time performing logical backup. : 5 hrs
• Restore Process is Manual and time taken > 5 hrs .

Expectations if worked with physical DB Backup:

• Backup size 2.5 GB
• Backup time : < 5 Mins
• Restore Time : < 5 Mins

Digital Services Group

Expectations from the Database Configuration

1. Support the existing data and minimize migration effort.

2. Support for the existing workload and meet the required performance benchmarks.

3. Ability to provide high availability support for the database services

4. Low configuration effort

5. High scalability

6. Seamless integration with big data and other structured and unstructured databases .

7. High database support availability

8. Maximum support for the existing SQLs imbedded in the applications and the ETL tools .

9. Support to REST APIs

10. Justifiable total cost of installation [TCO] and maintenance
