A transmission line with two sections is shown in figure

, the ratio of CT energizing the relay is 200/1 A and PT

ratio is 166kV/110 V. Determine the impedance setting of
the three relays and draw their characteristics on RX
diagram.

ZAB= 10 +j 60Ω j 0.1 pu ZBC= 6 +j 25Ω

Zsec = Zpri * (CT ratio/ VT ratio)
Three zone impedance setting of transmission line
 First zone covers up to 75% of first section
Second zone covers 100% of first and 50
% of second section
Third zone covers up to 100% of second section
For section AB, impedance seen by the relay is

 ZAB= (10 +j 60Ω) (200/1) ÷ (166x 103/110)

ZAB = 1.325+ j 7.951 Ω

Impedance setting of first zone relay
=0.75 (1.325+ j 7.951) Ω
o
= 1 + j 5.96 Ω = 6.04 /80.4 Ω
Zbase of Transformer = (kVbase)2 / MVAbase
= (166)2/10 = 2755.6 Ω
Actual impedance of transformer = j 0.1(2755.6) Ω
= j 275.56Ω
Impedance of Transformer as seen by relay
Ztr= j 275.56Ω (200/1) ÷ (166x 103/110)
Ztr = j 36.52 Ω
ZBC transferred to 166 kV side = 6 +j 25Ω (166/33)2
= 151.8 + j 632.6 Ω
ZBC impedance seen by the relay is:
= 151.8 + j 632.6 Ω (200/1) ÷ (166x 103/110)
= 20.11 + j 83.33 Ω
Impedance setting of second zone relay

= 100% of ZAB + Ztr + 50% of ZBC

=(1.325+ j7.951 Ω) + j36.52 Ω + 0.5 (20.11+j83.83) Ω

o
= 11.8 + j 86.386 Ω = 87.1 / 82.5 Ω
Impedance Setting of third zone relay

= 100% of ZAB + Ztr + 100% of ZBC

= (1.325+ j7.951 Ω) + j36.52 Ω + (20.11+ j83.83) Ω

= 21.435 + j 128.3 X
o
= 130 /80.5 Ω
