UNIT 7 – THE SIMPLE PAST

 We use the simple past for completed actions


in the past. Example:

I watch TV everyday.
I watched TV yesterday.

I study English on Saturdays.


I studied English when I was young.

 We add –ed for the simple past of regular verbs.

visit → visited
talk → talked
love → loved
play → played
stop → stopped

 Irregular verbs don’t follow a specific rule:

Examples:

I go to the movies every month.


I went to the movies yesterday.

I’m a photographer. I take pictures for a living.


I took a beautiful picture yesterday.

be was, were go went


choose chose have had
come came know knew
do did make made
drink drank see saw
drive drove sleep slept
eat ate take took
forget forgot tell told
get got write wrote
give gave

 To aks questions in the past, we use the


auxiliary verb DID. Examples:

Do you drink coffee? Yes, I do.

Did you drink coffee this morning? Yes, I did. I


drank 2 cups.

What do you do? I’m a teacher.

What did you do yesterday? I worked all day long.

Where do you live? I live in Rio.

Where did you live in 2005? I lived in New York.

We also use the auxiliary verb DID in negative


statements. Examples:

Did you eat all my candy? No, I didn’t!

Where were you yesterday? I called you home


more than five times. You didn’t answer the
phone! → I’m sorry, I didn’t stay home last night. I
went to the movies.
