The Abanquino Carnival is an

important, colorful and mischievous


celebration that takes place
throughout the department of
Apurimac. In this celebration the
excitement prevails and no one can
escape the joy and entertainment
typical of the carnival. Its celebration
is movable and follows the carnival
calendar, usually presented between
the months of February to March
prior to Ash Wednesday.
In Abancay the carnival was
danced, beginning the day before
the Dominican carnival and finishing
on Ash Wednesday, which was the
day of farewell, although some
people used to do it on the
following Thursday, as a finale to
the carnival festivities. Saturday was
the entrance of the Ñiño Carnavalón
or King Momo .
MEN: WOMEN:
- Poncho walnut - Bordered polleras

- Close-fitting bag - Small colored blanket


- Pants with ornaments on both sides - Vest with ornaments called a jacket
- Hat decorated with colored ribbons - Wide-brimmed hat adorned with wide

- Usual Shoes black ribbons


- Cowhide or cowhide whip - Stylish booty shoes
In the celebration the different yunzas
that are located, usually in the corners of
the neighborhoods, are indispensable.
These yunzas are characterized by the
presence of different trees that are
planted for these celebrations and
adorned with many colors of snakes, as
well as caves, balloons and gifts; the
people have met in the celebration in the
tree and in pairs they are in charge of
going to do it, the one that manages to
demolish it will be the one in charge, the
next will be the next yunza.
