What is ERP
 ERP system stands for Enterprise Resource
Planner System
 A single system for enterprise wide data and
business processes
 ERP systems cover a wide range of business
functions using multiple software modules
 Data is integrated using one unified database
Why companies use ERP
 Companies need robust softwares to manage their daily
business operations.
 ERP systems provide enterprise wide visibility of the business
critical data
 ERP systems facilitate the companies need to file various
mandatory financial reports to the government and
shareholders.
 ERP systems provide excellent security features preventing
unauthorized access of data across departments and from
outside.
 Companies do not have to ‘REINVENT THE WHEEL’. ERP
packages are fully fucntional out of the box. Need to customize
according to individual business requirements.
Aspects of ERP Software
package
 A typical company have many business
components. Some of them are:
 Finance
 Purchasing
 Order Management
 Inventory
 ERP software provides functionality for atleast
3 or more of the above business components.
 Examples of some ERP softwares are Oracle
Applications, PeopleSoft, SAP, JD Edwards.
Etc.
Oracle Applications
 Oracle E-business Applications is an ERP package
delivered by Oracle Corp.
 It is highly robust and extensive package covering
multiple business operations.
 Major modules within Oracle applications are Oracle
Financials, Order Management, Purchasing,
Inventory, Manufacturing.
 The earliest version started with 10.7. Upgrated to
11.0.1 to 11i to 11.5.4, 11.5.5 .. 11.5.10.
 Current release is Oracle E-business suite 12i.
Major contributors: Functional
 Functional folks have a high level understanding of
Oracle E-business suite functionality.
 They typically ‘SET UP’ the Oracle E-business
environment in order to make it fully functional.
 They should possess good understanding of the
business in general and map it to Oracle E-business.
 They should be aware of the technical aspects of the
module but in-depth knowledge not required.
 Customer facing job, hence good communicational
and writing skills are a must.
Major Contributors: Technical
 Technical folks develop custom programs and
extensions which are required when seeded
‘out-of-the-box’ functionality is not sufficient.
 Also generate custom reports for various
reporting requirements.
 The work mainly involves some but not all of
the following: Oracle SQL, Oracle PL/SQL,
Oracle Forms 6i, Oracle Reports 6i, Oracle
Workflow, Java, JSP, JDeveloper
