Noise Pollution

What is Noise?
In simple terms, noise is
simply unwanted sound.
Sound is a form of
energy which is emitted
by a vibrating body and
on reaching the ears
causes the sensation of
hearing through nerves.
A noise problem generally consists of three
inter-related elements:-
- the source,
- the receiver and
- the transmission path

Path
Source
Receiver
Types Of Noise :-

 Noise may be continuous or intermittent.

 Noise may be of high or low frequency
whichever is undesired for a normal hearing.
The differentiation between noise and sound
also depends upon-

- the habit and interests of the person/species,

- the ambient conditions,
- impact of sound.
Noise Measurement
 The intensity of
sound is measured
in Sound Pressure
Levels(SPL) and
the common unit
of measurement is
decibel, dB.
Sources of Noise
PACHE
HAT BE!!
 Domestic Sources
- Movement of utensils
- From Television sets.
- From Music Systems.
 Natural Sources
- Shores, birds and
animal shouts.
- Wind movement,
sea tide movement,
- Waterfalls
 Commercial
Sources
- Vendor Shouts,
automobiles, aero
planes, marriages,
laboratory,
machinery etc.
 Industrial Sources
Generator sets,
boilers, plant
operations, trolley
movement,
transport vehicles,
pumps, motors etc.
Examples of Sound Levels
 • Soft whisper-30dB
 • Normal conversation-50-60dB
 • Subway, city traffic, alarmclock, and
factories-80dB
 • Chainsaw, stereoheadphones, andnightclub-
100dB
 • Sound at rock concert infront of speakers
-120dB
 • Gunshot or jet plane-140dB
 • Rocket launching-180dB
Impact of Noise

Why bother about Noise?

 Annoyance mia

 Physiological Effects
 Loss of hearing
 Cardiovascular problems
 Increase in B.P
 Damage Nervous System
 Sleeplessness
 Hypertension
 Tinnitus (perception of sounds
even in absence of any external
sounds)
Control of Noise Pollution

The techniques employed for noise

control can be broadly classified as

- Control at Source
- Control in the transmission
path
- Using protective equipment
Control at Source

 Reducing the noise levels

from Domestic Sectors.
 Maintenance of
automobiles.
 Speaking softly.
 Prohibiting loudspeakers.
 Maintenance of machines
Control in the transmission
path
 Installation of
barriers.
 Design of Building
- Installation of
panels or
enclosures.
- Green Belt
Development.
Using protective equipment

 Ear muffs, ear

plugs
Whether knowingly or unknowingly,
everyone of us contribute to noise pollution.

Identify the sources of noise pollution.

Efforts should be made to reduce the

undesired noise levels from (unwanted)
noise generating sources.
Its high time that everyone should do
this bit in curbing the noise pollution,
which is otherwise becoming as
effective as SLOW POISIONING.
