Energy

The ability to do work

 If an object has energy, it has the ABILITY to do
work – can produce motion
 Think of it like the amount of currency ($$$)
something has to do work
 It is a SCALAR quantity – direction does NOT
matter
What is  Its units is in Joule (J)
Energy?  Energy has many forms – can be
TRANSFERRED between objects and
TRANSFORMED
 The Law of Conservation of Energy states:
Energy can NEVER be created or destroyed!
 Requires ENERGY, without energy work
cannot be done
 Is related to FORCE
 When a force is applied to MOVE an object -
What is Work work was done on the object
 It can be defined by –
Work (J) = Force x Distance
POTENTIAL ENERGY
 Stored energy
 Depends on the position of the object
 P.E. (J) = Mass x Acceleration of Gravity x
Mechanical Height
Energy KINETIC ENERGY
 Energy of motion
 Depends on velocity
 K.E. (J) = ½ x Mass x (Velocity)2
