Module 1

Section Design of Moment & shear of

reinforced concrete beams
Learning Objective

 Describe the response of a reinforced concrete beam to loads

which causes bending and shear.
 Apply relevant equations and design aids to determine the flexural
reinforcement required in a reinforced requirement in a reinforced
beam
 Apply relevant equations to determine the shear reinforcement
required in a reinforced concrete beam.
 Explain mechanism by which reinforcing steel in bonded to, and
anchored in, concrete.
 Determine the flexural and shear reinforcement in a reinforced
concrete beam which satisfies the deemed-to-comply
requirements of AS3600
Learning Objective

 Describe the load-deflection relationship of a ductile simply

supported reinforced concrete beam under both short term and
long term loadings.
 Calculate short term and long term deflections of reinforced
concrete beams.
 Determine the depth of a beam which satisfies the span-to depth
ratio requirements of AS3600.
