INTRODUCTION

Fluid spaces and forms equally referred to as water

architecture because of the outflowing and it is continuously
seamless. Fluid architecture concerns with the flow in and
around buildings. This flow is responsible for the ventilation
of buildings and the quality of the indoor air.

Fluid project is categorized based on the form concept.

Evolution of fluid architecture is inspired from the fluid flow
and curvy lines of Arabic calligraphy. Antoni Gaudi’s projects
testify to his genius in creating fluid architecture in 19th
century, style which was given free forms and spaces in the
design.

Casa Batllo, Antoni Gaudi

INTRODUCTION

Fluid architecture is mostly established and recognized

through Zaha Hadid’s works especially with regard to fluid
space which she considers it as a part of her architectural
designing. Fluid architecture forms have smooth,
continuous surfaces. Each element have an aesthetic
property for example: Windows and entrances’ slots take
the same fluid form of the masses.

Frank Gehry uses fluid movement as a part of his design,

were the fluid movement is pervasive which expresses
emotion through a sense of movement. Frank Gehry
buildings respond to time and our constantly changing
world. Engaging people's feelings is essential which means
finding ways to express feelings and emotions in
architecture.

Aim
The aim of the dissertation is to study spatial quality of fluid architecture, how is fluid
architecture, in terms of spatial quality. Perceived, perceiving through a study of the spatial
quality in works of
• Antoni Gaudi
• Zaha Hadid and
• Frank Gehry

Objectives

• To study spatial quality in fluid architecture in relation with emotive aspects.

• To understand the elements that creates the design quality in fluid
architecture.
• Study and Understanding of evolution of fluid architecture.
• To criticise analyse and arrive at merit and demerit in fluid architecture with
respect to develop the spatial quality.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Main question:
• How does fluid design enhance architectural spatial quality?

Sub questions:

• How space and form behave with each other?

• In respect with comparison of different fluid elements how perception of
quality of space can be studied?
• What are the different forms and spaces configurations that make fluid
architecture a quality space?
• Form and feeling emotive aspect of fluid architecture.
• How does fluid architecture adapt flexibility in to day to day changes in
design?
Scope
• Understanding the evolution of forms, spaces and concept of fluid
architecture.
• To understand the gap of reading between architecture and fluid design in
terms of spatial quality.

Limitation

• Study concentrates only on Antoni Gaudi, Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry’s work.
• Detailed digital analysis is not done.
• The study concentrates of spatial quality more than the functional aspects.
