Hey Bridge
• The Hey’s bridge is a modification over
the Maxwell’s bridge

• The Hay circuit is more convenient for

measuring high-Q inductors especially
those having a Q >10
Phasor diagram of arm 4&1
• We know the condition for the bridge
balance point :
• Using above equations..
• Unknown resistence & inductance, can be
calculated.. The Q value is,

Q = 1/ωC4r4
Advantages & Disadvantages
of Hay's Bridge
• ADVANTAGE:- The bridge gives very simple
expression for the calculation of unknown
inductor of high value. The Hay's bridge require
low value of r4 while Maxwell bridge requires
high value of r4.

• DISADVANTAGE:-Hay's bridge is not suitable

for measurement of quality factor (Q<10) for
Q<10 we should use Maxwell bridge.
Schering Bridge
• It’s uesd extensively for the mesurement of
capacitors

• It’s also used for mesuring insulating

properties that is for phase angles of very
nearly 90o

• Commercial schering bridge measures

capacitors from 100pF - 1µF with ± 2 %
accuracy
Phaser diagram of bridge
• The bridge is widely used for testing small
capacitors at low voltage with high
precision
• Substituting,
• Power factor :- it is defined as the
cosine of phase angle of ckt

• For phase angle cos 90°, reactance is

equal to impidance
• Dissipation factor :- It’s define as
cotangent of the phase angle

• For Schering Bridge, Rx is a fixed value, the

dial of Cx can be calibrated directly in D at
one particular frequency
