What is Cloud Computing ?
“The Cloud is a Virtualization of resources that
maintains and manages itself, delivering massively
scalable service across Internet.”

Its Called The Fifth Generation of Computing

(after Mainframe, Personal Computer, Client-
Server Computing, and the web) .
Cloud Computing contd…
Popular phrase Cloud Computing is shortened
for rich internet applications that run on the
Internet (or "Cloud").

A very pragmatic definition is used by Consulting

firm Accenture: ―
The dynamic provisioning of IT capabilities
from third parties over a network.
Cloud Computing contd…
Runs on Virtual Infrastructure.

Another Definition
“Renting of services over Internet .”

No need to buy a Infrastructure to run a Service.

You Rent it.
Cloud Computing contd…
It’s a platform where consumer can buy Computing
and Storage power on a Rental Basis.

Customer pays for the time service used.

Also called as Internet computing .

Why Cloud Computing ?
Faster Time To Market
On-Demand Elastic Infrastructure
Pay-as-Use
24 x 7 Support
Device & Location Independent
Highly Automated
Low Capital Expenditure
Three Service Models

IaaS PaaS SaaS

Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS)
The provider Outsources a Infrastructure.

Infrastructure includes Server, Storage, Networking,

Operating System and basic set of Softwares.

The user decides the Infrastructure assets

according to his own needs.
IaaS Contd…
Infrastructure maintenance is done by the
provider.

User Remotely Accesses the Infrastructure.

IaaS can be used for Code Development

or Software Testing without buying new Hardware.
IaaS Contd…
Major Companies Providing IaaS are
Amazon EC2
Rackspace
EMC2
Platform as a Service(Paas)
Delivery of Computing Platform over the Web.

Platform is the place where software can be

developed and tested.

Development Tool ready at hand.

PaaS Contd…
Mostly used by Developers who need fast software
development.

Web applications are the most preferred choice

in PaaS.
PaaS Contd…
Major Companies Providing PaaS are
Google app engine
SalesForce.com
Microsoft’s Azure
Software as a Service(SaaS)
SaaS is an Online Application.

Applications running on Cloud Infrastructure.

SaaS app’s total life cycle is taken care by the

provider.
No need to install any Software to access the SaaS
applications.
SaaS Contd…
User just need to access the App through the
Browser.
Major SaaS Providers are
NetSuite
Office Live
Zoho
Four Deployment Models
Community
Community
cloud
cloud
Public Cloud
Provides services to General Public.

Data center and Services are fully hosted and

managed by the provider.
The Customer doesn’t know where the services
are hosted.
Issue of Security but cheaper.
Private Cloud
Also called Inter Cloud or Corporate Cloud.
Used by Enterprise for its Private Use.
The Data Center is hosted inside the Premises of
the organization.
More Security.
But more Expensive.
Hybrid Cloud
Usage of both Private and Public cloud is
Hybrid Cloud.

Can host critical data on Private Cloud and

other less one on Public Cloud.

Have benefits of both public and private cloud.

Community Cloud
Is shared by Specific Organization

It supports a specific community that has shared

concerns.

It may be managed by the organizations or a

third party.
On Demand
Self Service
Broad Network
Measured Access

Conclusion

On March of 2010, Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer,

made his strongest statement by proclaiming
“For the cloud, we are all in” and further stating
“About 75% of our folks are doing entirely cloud or
entirely cloud inspired, a year from now that will be
90 percent.”
