HOW
TO
PREPARE
A
SOLUTION
STOCK SOLUTION
A stock solution- weighing out
an appropriate portion of a pure
solid or by measuring out an
appropriate volume of a pure
liquid and diluting to a known
volume (Harvey, 2016).
Example:
500 mL of 0.25 M
of NaCl
STEPS ON PREPARING STOCK
SOLUTION
• Find the molar mass of the compound or solute.
• If the molarity and liter of the solvent is given, find the mole of the
solute.
• After getting the mole, multiply it by the molar mass of the solute
to get the weight of the solute.
• Weigh the solute using an electronic balance weighing scale.
• Solute first before solvent when making a solution in Volumetric
flask.
• Shake it gently.
• Put it on an Erlenmeyer flask.
PREPARATION SOLUTION BY
DILUTION
DILUTION
A dilution is a solution made by
adding more solvent to a more
concentrated solution (stock
solution), which reduces the
concentration of the solute
(Harvey, 2016).
EXAMPLE:

FOR 250 ML OF AN APPROXIMATELY
0.10 M SOLUTION OF NH3. DESCRIBE
HOW YOU WOULD PREPARE THIS
SOLUTION USING A STOCK SOLUTION

GIVEN:
CO = 14.8 M OF NH3
VO = ?
CD = 0.10 M OF NH3
VD  = 0.25 L

dilution. CdVd = CoVo
