Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and cut off all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God. Deuteronomy 25:17-18 Exodus 17:8-15 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.“ So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. Exodus 17:8-15 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired…Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. Exodus 17:8-15 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword… Moses built an altar and called it THE LORD IS MY BANNER. He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD." YAHWEH NISSI! “The Lord, our Banner” The Christian Life Involves a Conflict Against Demonic Forces! “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” -Ephesians 6:12 When you came to Jesus, you not only gained a SAVIOR, you gained an ENEMY! When you were BORN AGAIN, You were born on BATTLEFIELD.
That is why you have some of the problems you have!
Satan hates everything God loves! …and God loves YOU! Satan is the “God of this World!” When Adam and Eve submitted to Satan’s temptation, the Dominion God gave to them reverted to Satan! That’s why the bible says, “The whole world lies under the power of the evil one!” Good news: God wants to always lead us in triumph against the enemy! Last week we look at one of God’s names: Yahweh Sabaoth: “Lord of Hosts” GOD’S NAMES REVEAL HIS NATURE! • Yahweh “JAIRA” – “The Lord who provides” • Yahweh “ROPHE” – “The Lord heals” • Yahweh “ROHI” – The Lord our Shepherd” • Yahweh “SABAOTH” – The Lord of Hosts” or “Almighty” YAHWEH = Covenant Name of God SABAOTH = Armies Literally = “LORD OF ARMIES” We saw last week: His Armies Include: 1. Hosts of physical heavens! (forces of nature) 2. Hosts of Spiritual heavens! (the angels) 3. But also includes THE CHURCH – THAT’S YOU! God’s people are part of His army! You are Called to the Battle! That’s why we need to know another of God’s names: YAHWEH NISSI! The Lord is my BANNER! This name is revealed in Exodus 17 Israel had just left Egypt and was traveling through the wilderness to the promised land. When they got to Rephidim, the Amalekites attacked. Deuteronomy fills in more detail… Not an open attack! Amalekites waited till they were weary and tired… and then attacked the stragglers at the rear of the camp! This name is revealed in Exodus 17 Moses has an interesting strategy! He sends Joshua to lead the army against the Amalekites.
In the valley… the battle rages!
Moses goes to the top of the hill overlooking the battlefield, raises his hands, and prays!
As long as Moses held up his
hands In prayer, the Israelites won! But when Moses grew weary and put his hands down, the Amalekites began to win! Aaron and Hur see that Moses is too weary to keep his hands up. So they get on either side of Moses & hold his hands up, so he can continue jn prayer! The result: They WON the Battle! So Moses builds an altar to the Lord! He proclaims there the name of YAHWEH NISSI: The Lord, Our Banner "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD." INTERESTING AND SIGNIFICANT PASSAGE! This is one of the key passages in the Bible in INTERCESSION! Intercession is one of the most important ministries God has given to His church! If we don’t understand intercession, we won’t walk in victory! Intercession means “to stand in the gap” We ALL need someone to stand in the gap! This passage: 4 levels of intercession necessary for full victory! 1. Joshua & the army STOOD IN THE GAP for the weak & weary who were attacked by the enemy. THAT’S THE CALL OF EVERY CHRISTIAN! The church is called to “equip the saints to do the work of ministry.” If you are a Christian, God has called you to MINISTER & that involves battle!
Ministry is “driving back the enemy!”
It is tearing down Satan’s works and setting his captives free! What is “MINISTRY”? Isaiah 61: the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor… to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners… to provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. Ministry is “driving back the enemy!” It is tearing down Satan’s works by healing and delivering! It’s setting Satan’s captives free by leading them into joy & freedom of a relationship with Jesus! It is a BATTLE because Satan will RESIST you! God has called you to that battle, and it’s a form of intercession! When you minister, you are standing in the gap for those who are oppressed by Satan! But you can’t do it alone! 2. Moses STOOD IN THE GAP for Joshua & armies of Israel! They needed a prayer covering to prevail!
That’s the job of spiritual leadership!
That’s Paul… pouring out his life for the church. Never ceasing to pray for each one day and night! But leaders cannot do that alone! 3. Aaron & Hur see that Moses is too weary to keep his hands up, so they STAND IN THE GAP for Moses!
That’s the role of a PERSONAL INTERCESSOR!
Leaders NEED personal intercessors! A leader who doesn't have intercessors to pray for him… will never make it! Personal intercessors work behind the scenes, but never make it without them. That’s three levels of intercession 1. Joshua and the army engage the enemy to intercede for the people! 2. Moses stands in the gap for those who are fighting. 3. Aaron and Hur standing in the gap for Moses. BUT THERE IS ONE MORE LEVEL OF INTERCESSION! At the end of the battle, Moses builds an altar & proclaims: THE LORD IS OUR BANNER! Above all else that was happening… Was the BANNER OF THE KING! The Lord was STANDING IN THE GAP for all of them! The Lord was acting as their banner of victory! WHY WAS A BANNER IMPORTANT?
IN ANCIENT WORLD, NO ARMY WENT INTO
BATTLE WITHOUT THEIR BANNERS! Every soldier kept his eye on the banner! If the banner bearer fell, another would pick it up! Your banner was you rallying point! YOUR BANNER DIRECTED YOUR ACTIVITY If banners moves forward… time to charge the enemy. If banners moving back… time for a strategic retreat. Banner was a symbol of identity. Each section of the Army had their own unique banner.
In Israel,,, each tribe
Had it’s own banner!
If you knew your
banner, you knew where you stood, who you were standing with, and what you were fighting for! Your banner was a Sign of Victory! If banner still flew… you won! During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was held captive by the British during their attack on Fort McHenry. As the sun set they could see the American flag… they wondered if the fort could survive the night! All through the night… they kept looking for the flag.. Sometimes they caught a glimpse of it by the light of the canon fire. When the morning came, Francis Scott Key & his friends looked to see if the flag was still flying… and when the smoke of the battle cleared… THE FLAG WAS STILL THERE! They knew the battle was won! He sat down to write what is now our national anthem… the Star Spangled Banner! If your banner is still flying… You have won the day! Armies go to great efforts to plant their When the banner is banner in the established in the territory! territory, you have won the battle! Moses says: God is our Banner! When you go into battle… Keep your eyes on Him! Let Him direct your steps! Draw your identity from Him! As long as you keep your eyes on HIM you will win! He is a banner that cannot fail! He will establish you in the place of every blessing! What is God’s banner over us?
Song of Solomon 2:4: His Banner is LOVE.
I expected: CHESSED, “covenant love” Loyalty. NOT THE WORD USED HERE! “AHAVA” – Word of PASSION… Powerful intimate love between man & woman. Includes idea of a lasting covenant Commitment… but is stronger! God’s AHAVA love means…
God is a GROOM, we are His BRIDE.
He is not just committed to us… He is PASSIONATE for us!
God lives to make Intercession for US!
God wants you to know Him as the LORD YOUR BANNER!
When you are in the battle,
KEEP YOUR EYES ON YAHWEH NISSI! He is there to STAND IN THE GAP for you! Lift up your hands to Him! Persevere… don’t give up! Call upon Him and you WILL WIN!
