History of PLC
Why we use PLC ??????
• PLC performs relay equivalent functions.
• PLC performs ON/OFF control.
• Ease Ladder diagram programming.
• Designed for industrial environment.
• Designed for industrial automation.
• Ease of maintenance.
• Quick installation.
Configurations of PLC
Mini PLC has same
capacity as Rack PLC but
smaller in size. Use in
small plants.
Micro PLC is generally
used for limited input
quantities.

Rack PLC is use for

industrial purpose and has
large input capacity.
Essential components of PLC Hardware
• Power Supply
• CPU (Central Processing Unit)
• I/O (Input/output)
• Indicator lights
Types of INPUT and OUTPUT Devices
INPUT OUTPUT
• Pushbuttons • Valves
• Selector Switches • Motor Starters

• Limit Switches • Solenoids

• Level Switches • control Relays

• Alarms
• Photoelectric Sensors
• Lights
• Relay Contacts
• Fans
• Thumbwheel Switches
• Horns
• Holding Switches
Relays concepts
• Relay is a electrical device which can be arranged in circuits to
make logical decisions.

• Any electrical devices have two states.

1. Normal State Off / Condition NO

2. Excited State On / Condition NC

PLC Programming
• The purpose of PLC program is to control the state of PLC
outputs based on the current condition of the PLC input.
• Different PLC’s support different languages, but the most popular
PLC language is known as “Ladder Logics”.

PLC Applications
PLC is applicable in industries for controlling hydraulic
and pneumatics valve, conveyor belts, relays etc.
Example of field where PLC is use:-

 Medicine products.
 Plastics products companies.
 Deodorants, soap and cosmetics products.
 water treatment plants
 In Jails
 Soft drink and food products processing and packing.
 Printing press
 Automobile Industries
 Power plants
