Asphalt Application

By : Jayson Macapayag
ASPHALT PAVEMENT
• refers to any paved road surfaced
with asphalt
• Hot Mixed Asphalt - combination
of approximately 95% coarse and
fine aggregates bounded
together by bitumen.
• Asphalt Pavement have good skid
resistance and smooth surface
which is perfectly good for high
speed vehicles.

ASPHALT PAVEMENT

ADVANTAGES
 Cost effective
 Speed of Construction
 Good Water Resistance
 Less Cracking than Concrete
DISADVANTAGES
 Weak during Hot Weather
 Formation of Crack during Cold Weather
ASPHALT LANDFILL
• Landfill Liner – an underlying layer
that protects the ground water
from toxic chemicals from the
landfill
• Asphalt is used as an alternative
material
• For this reason asphalt is often used
for drinking water reservoirs,
bottom protection of waste
disposal sites, waterproofing
constructions, etc.

Construction and surfacing of parking areas
Construction and surfacing of parking areas

 If a parking area is used by heavier vehicles than it was designed for,

damage to the construction is very likely to occur. It is therefore essential to
ensure that the design is appropriate for the potential use.
Decorative and coloured finishes for
asphalt surfacings
Decorative and coloured finishes for
asphalt surfacings
 The neat low-glare appearance of the traditional ‘blacktop’ surfacing,
especially when finished with the normal contrasting white lines, is most
pleasing and acceptable to the eye in most situations. However, there are
times when a specific colour or decorative finish is desired.
Uses of asphalt in the construction of
games and sports areas
Uses of asphalt in the construction of
games and sports areas
 Asphalts are used in games and sport areas in two ways:
 as the final surfacing layers over an appropriate base, which may also be an
asphalt mix, or

 as a firm base beneath one of the wide range of proprietary synthetic surfacings
promoted for use in these areas.
Farming applications of asphalt
Farming applications of asphalt

 Yards on farms are used for a wide range of purposes, from very light use,
such as car parking, to very heavy or aggressive use, for storage of heavy
mechanical plant or as holding areas for livestock. The durability of asphalt
surfacings can be affected by mechanical damage and heavy point
loadings and by accumulations of mud or animal droppings.
 The main use of asphalts in the surfacing of animal house floors has been on
cow cubicle beds, on which there has been growing use of the materials
over the last twenty years or so.
 Advantages claimed for these surfacings in this application includes; reduced
usage of bedding material, increased animal comfort as a result of good
insulation, increased floor durability, improved hygiene, good slip-resistance, and
ease of maintenance.
Airfield uses of asphalt
Airfield uses of asphalt

 Without hard paving, access may be difficult to the airfield, flying may be
restricted in inclement weather or the facilities may not come up to the
minimum standards required by the regulatory authorities.
 Runways require good skid resistance and surface water drainage for good
braking, an even surface regularity to ensure passenger comfort and
minimum risk of damage to delicate electronic components and
adequate strength to support the high wheel-loadings of modern aircraft.
 For aircraft parking areas the main requirement is adequate stability under
high wheel-loadings; for paved areas where aircraft will undergo re-fuelling
and servicing, the principal consideration is good resistance to oil and fuel
spillage.
 Where re-fuelling or maintenance operations are to be undertaken, areas
are simply intended for aircraft parking, high-strength design mix asphalts
have been used for the purpose and should prove satisfactory.
 Taxi-ways and runways both need to be constructed with sufficient strength
to carry the moving aircraft but from the surfacing point of view the
difference between the two is that runways require a higher degree of
resistance to skidding and aquaplaning in view of the higher speeds
involved. This acts as a drainage layer to prevent surface water adversely
affecting aircraft tyre grip on the surfacing in wet weather.
