Introduction

 Composite :- Something made up of distinct parts or constituents.

 Composite Material :- A combination of two or more materials with different
mechanical, chemical or physical properties.

 Carbon-Carbon Composite :- By the combination of two major elements

carbon fibers and a carbon matrix.
What are c/c composites ?

 A composite is basically a material that contains both a reinforcing material to

provide strength and stiffness and a matrix material to surround and hold the
reinforcement together.
 C/C composites are those special composites in which both the reinforcing fibers
and the matrix material are both pure carbon.
 C/C composite are in a special subclass of composite materials. Scientists and
Engineers don’t put C/C composites with fiberglass composites etc.
Composite material group
 Graphite fiber reinforcement plastic (GFRP) and aramids (Kevlar) are the common used of
the fibers.
 Polymer matrix composite (PMC) and fiber reinforcement plastic (FRP) are known as
Reinforced Plastics.

Carbon-carbon composite properties
 CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
 Carbon- Carbon (C-C) composites are fire resistance non flammable materials.
 Carbon- Carbon (C-C) have high resistant to corrosion and oxidation.
 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
 Carbon- Carbon (C-C) composites are designed in ideal thermal expansion (to reduce thermal
stress).
 Carbon- Carbon (C-C) composites are structured to absorbing or transmitting magnetic and
electrical energy.
 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
Higher strength and lighter materials five times lighter than steel and three times lighter than
aluminum.
Resistance to degradation in high fatigue applications much better than conventional materials.
Capability and ability of ductility, hardness, elasticity, creepy, and fracture toughness.
Processing of carbon-carbon composite
Advantages of carbon-carbon
composite
 It has long working life.
 It’s density is less than steel.
 It is insensitive to change in temperature.
 It’s property is much better than any of the other metals.
 It’s compressive strength is greater than all the reinforcing materials.
Disadvantages of carbon-carbon
composite
 It is very costly.
 It is little bit harmful to human body as it cause some form of lung cancer.
Applications
 It is mostly used in aerospace and aircraft industries.
 It is used in making sports equipment's such as light badminton rackets, golf sticks
etc..,
 Automotive body.
 Used in civil engineering.
 Construction of wind mills.
 Portable powers.
 Rechargeable batteries and fuel cell electrodes.
 Carbon Nosetip.
 Space motor nozzles.
