AIR INTAKE SYSTEM

Introduction

• The air intake system is designed to supply the gas turbine with the
required combustion air and to protect the blading of the gas turbine
compressor against premature wear.
• The combustion air taken in by the compressor is cleaned in a
combination of filters.
Air intake system includes:-
1. Weather hoods,
2. Bird screens,
3. Anti-icing-system,
4. Weather louver,
5. Pulse filter,
6. Evap-cooler and
7. Safety filter

Anti-icing System
• Anti-icing system are designed to
protect the filters & the intake
duct from icing during operation
under low outside temperature.
• Hot air from compressor is
guided via distribution pipes to
air intake of filter house.
Pulse Filter

Pulse filters are used to remove dust from the

air.
They are self cleaning type filters
Pulse cleaning
• During operation the dust
accumulation of the filter elements
and therefore their pressure drop
rises gradually.
• The pulse system monitors the
pressure drop and starts an automatic
pulse cleaning cycle, if the pressure
drop rises above a set value.
• The pulse system consists of 16
headers, 168 blowpipes and 1176 jet
nozzles
• If the pressure loss of the filter
cartridges has reached the set value,
the solenoid pulse valves open one by
one automatically for the pre-set pulse
time, so that the compressed air pulse
reaches - via the blowpipe opening
(nozzle) - the clean airside of the filter
cartridges.
• The air pulse generates a shock wave
inside the corresponding filter
cartridges, so that the adherent dust
particle cake on the outside of these
elements will be blown off in pieces
and rinse downwards the filter wall.

Dust evacuation system
• The floor of the filter-house is fitted
with a dust evacuation system.
• After pulsing, the dust from the pulse
filter fall down to the floor into a
hutch. The hutch is fitted with a screw
conveyor. The screw conveyor
transport the dust to a waste hold-up
tank
Evap Cooler
• The evaporative cooling media reduces the
air temperature of the combustion air of
the turbine by adiabatic humidification of
the intake air.
• Functional principle of the cooler is the
distribution of water over aerated cooling
pads. The pads are arranged in small
channels and passed by the intake air
stream. Therefore, the intake air is
humidified and cooled simultaneously.
EVAPORATIVE COOLER
Droplet Separator

Downstream the evaporative cooler system is

fitted with an additional droplet separator
reduce the amount of moisture in the
combustion air.

Safety filter
• The safety filter is the last stage in the
filter house and is for safety purposes
only. Safety filter reduces the amount of
dust in the air during the first operating
hours of the pulse filter stage.
• After the first dust loading phase is this
filter acting as “Safety filter” and
protects the GT against damage by
foreign object.
Implosion doors

• For implosion protection (e.g. if

the filters are blogged), the
filter-house is equipped with
four
implosion doors.
• The implosion doors are placed
on the roof of the plenum.
SILENCER
• The silencer casing and the silencer baffles
are designed to ensure the specific noise
limits. For this purpose the silencer baffles
are installed with baffle shoes inside the
silencer casing.
• The casing itself is designed as double wall
with an acoustic insulation inside.
INTAKE WITH VERTICLE DUCT
AIR INTAKE FLAP / DUCT

• The flap located in the intake duct of the air

inlet system must be opened before start-up
of the gas turbine.
• Three limit switches are installed at the flap
and cause an interlock of the start of the
turbine, if 2 of 3 switches do not indicate the
‘open’-position. One further limit switch is
installed at the flap to indicate the ‘closed’-
position of the flap.

INLET AIR DRYER

• During Standstill air dryer system reduces the

humidity & removes condensation from the
vicinity of air intake duct to prevent corrosion of
moisture sensitive components
• The system draws moist air from compressor
inlet & passes the air through desiccant wheel
removing excess moisture
