OSI MODEL DEFINITION
An open system is a model that allows any
two different systems to communicate
regardless of their underlying architecture.
 The purpose of OSI model is to open
communication between different systems
without requiring changes to the logic of
underlying hardware and software.
Layers of OSI model
 Physical layer
 Data link layer
 Network layer
 Transport layer
 Session layer
 Presentation layer
 Application layer
OSI model
Physical layer
Transmitting a raw bit over a
communication channel one side send a
bit and received other side as one bit
.physical layer deals with
mechanical,electrical and procedural
interface.
1)physical characteristics of interfaces &
media.
2)Representation of bits
3)Data rate
4) Synchronisation
5)line configuration
6)Physical topology
Data link layer
The DLL transforms the physical layer,a raw
transmission facility and is responsible for
node to node delievery .
1) framing
2) physical address
3) flow control
4) error control
5) access control
Network layer

This layer is responsible for the source to

destination delievery of a packet possibly
Across multiple networks.
1)logical addressing
2)routing
Transport layer

This is responsible for source to destination

delivery of entire message.
1)service point addressing
2)segmentation
3)connection control
4)Flow control
5)Error control
Session layer

The session layer is the network dialogue

Controller. It establishes ,maintains &
synchronizes the interaction b/w
communicating systems.
1)dialogue control
2)synchronization
Presentation layer

It is concerned with the syntax and

symantics of the information exchanged
b/w two systems.
1)translations
2)encryption
3) compression
Application layer

It enables the user ,to access the network.

It provides user interfaces & support for
services.
1)network virtual terminal
2)mail services
3)directory services
4)file transfer
