What is PANDAS
● Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders associated with streptococcal
Infections.
● This occurs when strep throat triggers a misdirected immune system reaction to
the brain which can cause inflammation on a child's brain.

Diagnosis
● PANDAS is a clinical diagnosis
- Meaning that there are not lab tests conducted to make a diagnosis.
● There is a diagnostic criteria that is followed during the diagnosis process.
- Presence of OCD and Tics disorder.
- Pediatric onset of symptoms (ages three to puberty)
- Streptococcal infections
- Onset of abrupt and worsening symptoms

Symptoms
● Presence of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
● ADHD (hyperactivity, inattention, fidgety)
● Separation Anxiety
● Changes in motor skills
● Joint Pains
● Trouble sleeping, bed wetting, and also daytime frequent urination
● Tics .

Treatment
● Antibiotics
- Penicillin
- Azithromycin
● Ivig (blood product from a donor)
- The subject is injected with antibodies that the body doesn’t produce to fight off
infection.
● Plasmapheresis
- In this process, the harmful auto-antibodies are removed from the patient's
bloodstream.
