Fortune 100 Stock Price

History
9/5/2018
Elizabeth Shields
Study Objectives
• Data provided by Professor Barton to explore the
use of RStudio for plots, particularly the matrix
plot.
• Explore when to use Minitab and Rstudio.
• Determine if there are relationships between the
Stock Prices of the top 6 Fortune 100 Companies
Study Activities
• Data Summary:
• Data shows closing stock price for each week for Fortune
100 companies (Ratio Level Data). Shows company
characteristics (such as number of employees, what
industry they operate in, revenues, etc. This is a mix of
Nominal, Interval, and Ratio level data) for 2017. Explore
any relationships between the top 6 firms in the data for
the Fortune 100 data. The notes tab of the data explains
how the data was obtained
• Analysis Plan:
• Create matrix plots in both RStudio and Minitab to
display the data and determine relationships between
the stock prices
Study Results
• The following slides show the matrix plots, followed
by a slide of explanation of the data

Matrix Plots from R Studio and
Minitab
• The matrix plots on the previous slides show the
weekly ending stock prices for the top 6 Fortune
100 companies: Walmart, Berkshire Hathaway,
Apple, Exxon Mobil, McKesson, and United Health.
Study Summary and
Recommendations
• In determining the relationships between stock prices of the top 6 Fortune
100 Companies, it is evident from the Matrix Plots that the stock prices
from Walmart, Berkshire Hathaway, Apple, and United Health tend to have
a positive effect on each other. Exxon Mobil and McKesson show little to no
correlation with the stock prices of other companies.
• McKesson and United Health appear to have a slight negative correlation
• The strong positive correlation between Berkshire Hathaway and other
stocks could be due to the fact that this group of Berkshire Hathaway
stocks contains stocks in Walmart, Apple, and United Health but not Exxon
and McKesson.
• I observed while RStudio was easier to use due to typing in a command to
get a similar result as checking numerous boxes in Minitab, the matrix plot
produced by R was harder to read and less visually appealing.
• Were I to further explore R, I would hope to use the other interface offered
by R to find a way to make more attractive graphs, as well as exploring
ways of producing tables like those used in Minitab to show standard
deviation, minimums and maximums, and averages.
