Kata SOTA awalnya dikemukakan Henry Harrison Suplee (1856-1943) dan

didokumentasikan Oxford English Dictionary tahun 1910 dengan tulisan:
"In the present state of the art this is all that can be done"

pada bidang penelitian tertentu, dalam periode waktu tertentu

• It provides a wide overview of a research area, to establish
if research evidence exists on a topic, and provides an
indication of the quantity of the evidence
