1991 – set up

 Founded by John Bird (now Lord John) and Gordon Roddick


 Response to increase in homelessness
 Monthly magazine sold exclusively on the streets
 Strat-up capitol provided by The Body Shop

 SOCIAL ENTERPRISE: A social enterprise is an organization that applies


commercial strategies to maximize improvements in financial, social and
environmental well-being
1993 - weekly

 In June 1993, The Big Issue became a weekly magazine rather than
monthly
 Regional editorials were introduced for Scotland, Wales, Northern and
Southern England
1995 – The Big Issue Foundation

 The Big Issue Foundation was set up to offer additional support and advice
to vendors
 for issues such as:
 housing
 health
 personal finance
 addiction.
Weekly Sales

 2001 – 300,000 copies per week


 2007-2011 – copies declined from 167,000 per week to less than 125,000
per week
 This led to an increase in competition between vendors
 2012 – relaunched with focus on campaigning and political journalism, the
cover price was increased
 2016 – celebrated surpassing 200 million magazine sales
