WHAT IS CULTURE…???
Culture is defined as a social domain that emphasizes the practices, discourses
and material expressions, which, over time, express the continuities and
discontinuities of social meaning of a life held in common.

Culture is the most important concept in the social sciences. It includes the values,
beliefs, behaviours, and material objects that, together, form a people’s way of
life.
CHANDIGARH….
Chandigarh, the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru,
was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at
the foothills of Shivaliks, it is known as one of the best experiments in urban
planning and modern architecture in the twentieth century in India.

Chandigarh derives its name from the temple of "Chandi Mandir" located in the
vicinity of the site selected for the city. The deity 'Chandi', the goddess of power
and a fort of 'garh' laying beyond the temple gave the city its name "Chandigarh-
The City Beautiful".

The foundation stone of the city was laid in 1952. Subsequently, at the time of
reorganization of the state on 01.11.1966 into Punjab, Haryana and Himachal
Pardesh, the city assumed the unique distinction of being the capital city of both,
Punjab and Haryana while it itself was declared as a Union Territory and under the
direct control of the Central Government.

Chandigarh is a cosmopolitan city that has always encouraged the various diverse
groups to intermingle with each other. Irrespective of diversity, people living here
mostly lead an urban lifestyle with all city standards.

CASTES:

Among the various castes that are present in Chandigarh, the most dominant ones
include Jats, Khatris, Aroras, Brahmans, Vaishas, Lohar, Gujjar, Tarkhan and
Sansins. People belonging to other castes also live in the place, though in minority.
These include the Awans, Arians, Kalals, Ahluwalias, Labans, Nais, Sainis, Kambohs
and Soods, apart from Banias, Bhatias, Brahmins and Chhimbas. Some of these
castes have Arabian, Persian and Turkish heritage as well.

Sikh Jat is the biggest community settled in Chandigarh. The people belonging to
this caste are expert in agriculture and contribute significantly towards the
regional agricultural output. They are characterized by a well-built appearance. A
strong will power and the determination to earn a better living are some of their
positives. The Khatris and Aroras are next largest in number, who are more into
trade than agriculture. Among the minor agricultural castes, Sainis and Kambojs
are the most prominent ones. The minority castes are occupied in agricultural
operations as well as local trading operations.

Chandigarh being predominantly occupied by the Sikhs, the most common
languages spoken here are Punjabi and Hindi and so the traditions are also a mix
of different religions. The people participate in all the religious, traditional
activities, rituals and they don’t restrict themselves to a single commitment.

LOHRI:

Lohri is celebrated on 13th of


January every year. The Lord
of Fire is worshipped on this
day and offerings are made
to the fire, followed by
bhangra and giddha. The
festival is celebrated to pay
tribute to the Almighty, for
the abundant harvest.

HOLI CELEBRATION:
Holi is among one of the festival celebrated all over India, In Chandigarh people
organizes Holi parties which offers Water Cannons, Rain Dance, Tomatina,
Mudslides, Bubble Bath and much more. It feels like a music festival only that this
one is filled with colours. Apart from parties, household members gather for
HOLIKA Dahan in Chandigarh - A practice in which people circulate around a big
bonfire to worship good over evil.

BAISAKHI:
Chandigarh celebrates the harvest festival of Baisakhi on 13th April every year
with great splendour. After the hard labour for winter crops, the festival comes
across as the occasion to celebrate. On the festival day, which marks Punjabi New
Year, prayers are held in the Gurdwaras, followed by the traditional dances and
songs.

Teej, Raksha Bandhan, Dussehra, Diwali, Gurpurab, Chritsmas, New Year,
Karwachauth, Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesh Visarjan, Navratris, Chhat Puja are the
festivals that city celebrate every year. During these festivals market places gets
crowded as people in numbers come for shopping.

ROSE FESTIVAL:
The Rose Festival of Chandigarh is a floral festival held every year in February in
the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden of sector 16, Chandigarh. The garden where the
festival is held host about 50,000 plants of 1,600 species of Rose. The festival also
features musical events, art works, helicopter rides, dog show.

Besides festival celebrations, city also takes part in awareness programs through
roadside shows by theatre actors, school children etc. There are number of
defined spaces in Chandigarh where all these Rituals, Festival Celebrations, Plays
are performed, such as Rock Garden, Rose Garden, Sector 17 Plaza, Sukhna Lake,
Sector 42 Lake, Elante Mall and many more.

LIFESTYLE:

People in Chandigarh are accustomed to a leisurely lifestyle, which sets them


apart from the residents of other major cities in India. However, with the passing
time, they are adopting themselves to a fast paced lifestyle. People in the city are
very friendly and warm. Even when they live a very busy life, they try make it a
point to dedicate some of their time to their loved ones and go for outing,
especially during weekends, to some of the major attractions of the city such as
Gardens, Lakes, City Centre, Market Places etc.

LIFESTYLE:

Over the passing years, the city has become a trendsetter in fashion. Youth
studying in different colleges of the city hang out with their friends, flaunting their
chick clothing. People here easily embrace the drastic change in the fashion
trends. Unlike the major metropolitans, where the life literally starts after 10 pm,
Chandigarh goes off to sleep early. The celebrations of most of the occasions
generally do not extend beyond 10 pm. Nonetheless, you can still find a decent
amount of people partying in pubs, discs, some eatery places.

CUISINES:
There is nothing specific as far as the Chandigarh cuisine is concerned. It is mainly
the Punjabi food that forms part of cuisine of Chandigarh, India. Punjabi cuisine is
popular not just among Indians, but also among the foreigners. The staple food
mainly consists of wheat-based Rotis, Paranthas, Naan & Chhole Bhature.

The main feature of Punjabi food is the extensive use of butter, cream, ghee and
cheese. Their meals usually consist of pulses cooked on a slow flame with the
traditional Punjabi tadka. For preparing the gravy, a mixture of onion, tomato,
ginger, garlic and spices are used. Usually the traditional Punjabi food is prepared
in the earthen tandoors, which give the food a unique aroma. In the category of
beverages, one name that truly deserves a mention is the Punjab-di-Lassi and Tea
in Beverages.
Popular Punjabi vegetarian dishes:
Makki di Roti, Sarson ka Saag, Dal Makhni, Kadhi, Punjabi Chhole, Palak Paneer,
Stuffed Vegetable Punjabi Parantha, Baingan da Bhartha.

Non-veg dishes:
Butter Chicken, Punjabi Lachha Paratha, Chicken Tikkas, Amritsari Fish

Since Chandigarh is always open to adapt different cultures, a taste of South
Indian dishes like Dosa, Idli, Sambhar etc, Gujrati Dhokla are also become famous
over the years.
Being Punjabi dominant city, people are more inclined towards spicy food,
Golgappas, Chaat Papdi, Dahi Bhalla, Alloo Tikki, Samosas, Pakodas etc are among
some famous street foods.
In recent years, some other exotic street foods from China, Nepal, Italian are also
being noticed in abundant in the city, Cho – mein, Momos, Spring Rolls, Burgers,
Pizzas, Sandwiches etc.

The city reflects a blend of different cultures within the country. It can be
attributed to the fact that Chandigarh has attracted people from virtually all parts
of the country. It houses several Central Govt institutions, branches of almost
every national bank & research institutes. Also, there are large establishments of
Air force and army.

ARCHITECTURE:

Chandigarh being land of multicultural people, its Architectural style binds the city
into oneness. Functional, Modernistic forms of buildings with exposed material
expresses the genuine character of the city.

However, with passage of time as technology, techniques and needs of the


habitants have evolved, Architecture character of the residences have also been
transformed from exposed structural materials to imported cladding exteriors. But
still strive to maintain the original character of the city.
