• The fish uses its own body and its field to locate objects in the waters. As an
inspiration we take this fact to build a sensing model for our fish like robot.
• The task of the electrodes is twofold: to build up and to measure an electric field.
To do this the electrodes are arranged on a two-dimensional receptor surface, e.g.
in a single line at fixed intervals or in a larger two-dimensional field of sensor
electrodes. In that arrangement, usually one or two electrodes form the emitting
system
similar to the electric organ of the fish), while all other electrodes are used for
electric field measurements (similar to the electroreceptor array of the fish).
Depending on the
• measuring task, the electrical signal that is emitted by the electrodes can be a sine
wave (as in wave-type electric fishes) or a brief pulse (as in pulse-type species).
The voltage along the receptor array is determined at each measuring electrode,
A/D-converted and transferred to a computer for further analysis. To detect, localize,
and
• analyse an object in front of the sensor-array, the difference between the
undisturbed field and the field distorted by an object is calculated and processed
