IMPORTANT DEFINITION RELATED TO SECTION 01
CHEMICAL FAMILY
The chemical family describes the general nature of the chemical. Chemicals belonging to the same family often
share certain physical and chemical properties and toxic effects. However, there may also be important differences.
For example, toluene and benzene both belong to the aromatic hydrocarbon family. However, benzene is a
carcinogen, but toluene is not.
CHEMICAL FORMULA
The chemical formula, sometimes called the molecular formula, tells which elements (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and
so on) make up a chemical. It also gives the number of atoms of each element in one unit or molecule of the
chemical. The chemical formula can be used to confirm the identity of ingredients or to indicate the presence of a
potentially hazardous element.
For example, zinc yellow has the chemical formula ZnCrO4, which shows that it contains not only zinc (Zn) but also
chromium (Cr).

IMPORTANT DEFINITION RELATED TO SECTION 01
(CAS #) CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS SERVICE NUMBER:
• A Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number is a unique identifier that tells you,
For example, that acetone and dimethyl ketone are actually the same substance.
• An assigned number used to identify a chemical. CAS stands for Chemical Abstracts Service, an
organization that indexes information published in Chemical Abstracts by the American Chemical
Society and that provides index guides by which information about particular substances may be
located in the abstracts.
• Sequentially assigned CAS numbers identify specific chemicals, except when followed by an
asterisk(*) which signifies a compound (often naturally occurring) of variable composition. the
numbers have no chemical significance.
• The CAS number is a concise, unique means of material identification.

Flammability
• Flammability is the ability of a material to ignite and burn readily.
Auto-ignition Temperature
• The approximate temperature at which a flammable gas-air mixture will ignite without spark or flame.
Flashpoint
• The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid or solid gives off enough vapour to form a
flammable air-vapour mixture near its surface.
• The lower the flash point, the greater the fire hazard.
• The flash point is an approximate value and should not be taken as a sharp dividing line between safe
and hazardous conditions.
• The flash point is determined by a variety of test methods which give different results.
• Two types of methods are abbreviated as
OC (open cup) and
CC (closed cup).

THRESHOLD LIMIT VALUE (TLV)
ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygiene) term for airborne concentration of a
substance below which all workers are believed to be protected while exposed to it day after day for 8-
hours period.
For gases and vapours – TLV is stated as parts per million (PPM) of surrounding air.
For fumes, mists and dusts - TLV is stated as milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) of surrounding air.
1. TLV-TWA : time weighed average concentration for normal 8 hours workday or 40-hour workweek.
3. TLV-C : ceiling exposure limit or maximum concentration that should not be exceeded under any
circumstances, while meeting the daily TLV-TWA.
Title : Material Safety Data Number : TRP/1009A/ 053 Version : 01 Date : 23.10.2018 Slide No: 38 /71
PERMISSIBLE EXPOSURE LIMIT (PEL)
• Permissible exposure limit (PEL) is the legal limit in the US for maximum concentration of any
chemical in the air to which a worker may be exposed continuously for eight hours without any danger
to health and safety. Permissible exposure limit (PEL) is established by Occupation Safety Health
Administration (OSHA).
• It is based either on time weighted average or the maximum exposure limit prescribed by regulations.
• An atmospheric concentration of any toxic compound above the permissible exposure limit is
established by OSHA,NIOSH or ACGIH. Here are example of common toxic gases

• Equilibrium solubility (mol/L)
• Maximum possible concentration of a substance dissolved in water.
Title : Material Safety Data Number : TRP/1009A/ 053 Version : 01 Date : 23.10.2018 Slide No: 42 /71
IMPORTANT DEFINITION RELATED TO SECTION 09
Specific gravity
• Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a material to the density of water.
The density of water is about 1 gram per cubic centimetre (g/cc).
• Materials which are lighter than water (specific gravity less than 1.0) will float.
Most materials have specific gravities exceeding 1.0, which means they are heavier than water and so
will sink.
• Knowing the specific gravity is important for planning spill clean-up and fire fighting procedures.
• For example, a light flammable liquid such as gasoline may spread and, if ignited, burn on top of a
water surface.
pH
• The pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity (alkalinity) of a material when dissolved in water.
• It is expressed on a scale from 0 to 14.

Stability
• Stability is the ability of a material to remain unchanged in the presence of heat, moisture or air.
• An unstable material may decompose, polymerize, burn or explode under normal environmental
conditions.
• Any indication that the material is unstable gives warning that special handling and storage precautions
may be necessary.
Corrosivity
• Corrosivity is a measure of how aggressive water is at corroding pipes and fixtures. Corrosive-causes
visible destruction of, or irreversible alterations in, living tissue by chemical action at the site of contact.
Polymerize or Polymerization
• Polymerization is the process of forming a polymer by combining large numbers of chemical units or
monomers into long chains.

LC50
• LC stands for lethal concentration. LC50 is the concentration of a material in air which causes the
death of 50% (one half) of a group of test animals.
• The material is inhaled over a set period of time, usually 1 or 4 hours.
• The LC50 helps determine the short-term poisoning potential of a material.
LD50
• LD stands for lethal dose.LD50 is the amount of a material, given all at once, which causes the death of
50% (one half) of a group of test animals.
• The LD50 can be determined for any route of entry, but dermal (applied to skin) and oral (given by
mouth) LD50's are most common.
• The LD50 is one measure of the short-term poisoning potential of a material.
