BLUETOOTH HISTORY
• Bluetooth is named after Harald Blåtand (Bluetooth)
Gormson of Denmark, who united his country in the 10th
century.
 Began as a private development effort at Ericsson in
1994
Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest
Group) :
5 companies Erricson, Intel ,IBM, Toshibha and Nokia
joined (SIG) in 1998.
Currently more than 2500 adopter companies
 First specification: released in July 1999.
 Current specification : Bluetooth 1.2
ORIGIN

 Purpose :
 Create a cable replacement standard for personal area
network
 Handle simultaneously both data and voice between a
wide range of device.
key features :
Robustness
Low complexity of use
Low power
 Low cost
WHAT IS BLUETOOTH?

Bluetooth is a short range (10-100 m) and low-

cost wireless network system to replace cables
and give RF connection between consumer
device.

• The Bluetooth specification defines a uniform

structure for a wide range of devices to connect
and communicate with each other.
BLUETOOTH DETAILS

 Uses the radio range of 2.45 GHz

 Short range(10m-100m)
 Voice and data transfer
 Theoretical maximum bandwidth is 1 Mb/s
 Several Bluetooth devices can form an adhoc
network called a “piconet”

 Example: A conference room with many

laptops wishing to communicate with each
Other
PICONET
In PICONET one device
acts as master(set
frequency hopping) and
one device acts as slave.
SCATTERNET
WORKING OF BLUETOOTH

Auto conversation between Bluetooth enabled devices.

 Formation of personal area network (PAN) or
piconet.
 Spread-spectrum frequency hopping.
 Device works on 79 individual, random frequency
within a designated range.
 Transmitter changes 1600 frequencies/sec.
 Data rate up to 1 Mbitsps
WORKING (CONTD…….)
Inquire
• Page
• Establish a link using Link Manager Protocol
• Discover services using SDP
• Create a channel
• Authenticate
• Send and receive data
WORKING OF BLUETOOTH
BLUETOOTH CHARACTERSTICS

Allows up to 8 devices to communicate in a local

network called a Piconet, also known as a Personal
Area Network or PAN

Because of its low power consumption, its range is

limited to 10 m.

However, range can be increased to 100 m by

employing a scatternet topology or a higher powered
antenna
CLASSES OF BLUETOOTH
Three classes of Bluetooth devices

 -Class 3 radios – have a range of up to 1 meter or 3 Feet.

 -Class 2 radios – most commonly found in mobile devices

– have a range of 10 meters or 30 feet

 -Class 1 radios – used primarily in industrial use cases –

have a range of 100 meters or 300 feet
Bluetooth security
3 modes of communication
• Mode 1 or Insecure mode
 Mode 2 is known as service-level enforced security
 Mode 3 is known as link-level enforced security

 Security is provided in three ways

 pseudo-random frequency hopping
 authentication
 encryption
BLUETOOTH ENABLED DEVICES
PRESENT APPLICATION
Wireless keyboards, mouse, USB adapter, modems, pc
cards.
• File transfer.
 Headsets, music players.
 GPS receiver.
 Data sharing.
 Gaming.
 Barcode scanner
FUTURE APPLICATIONS

 Success of Bluetooth depends on how well it

is integrated into consumer products
 -Consumers are more interested in applications than the
technology
 -Bluetooth must be successfully integrated into consumer --
products
 -Must provide benefits for consumer
 -Must not destroy current product benefits

 Key Success Factors
 -Interoperability
 -Mass Production at Low Cost
 -Ease of Use
 -End User Experience
CONCLUSION
Bluetooth application is real and widely adopted by
industries.
The possibilities for new application is very exciting
with this versatile technology.
In we will be able to see some new boom in science
using this technology.
Recently a project has been completed by IITians in
which daily used devices can be searched using
bluetooth of mobile and PDA.
