THE INTERNET

• can be defined as a
global communication
network consisting of
thousand of interconnect
networks

THE INTERNET

• It has revolutionized the computer and

communication world.

• Initially conceptualized as a mechanism in the US

military for information dissemination,

• It has invaded the world and since then serves as

medium of interaction and collaboration among
individuals regardless of geography location.

THE EMERGENCE
OF THE INTERNET

• While the United States was busy

building big cars and colored
television sets,
• Soviet Union launched SPUTNIK 1,
the world’s first manmade satellite
into orbit, on October 4, 1957.

SPUTNIK 1 | 1957

• Though it only tumbled around in space

and sent blips and bleeps from its
transmitters, for the Americans, it must be
something alarming.
• It was alarming so the federal government
ordered different agencies to do research
and develop technologies like weapons,
rockets, and computers.

ARPA / ARPANet

• When Lawrence Roberts starts working on

the ARPA, he develop a plan for ARPANet,
• A computer network designed to
withstand power outages.
• He considered Baran’s ideas on
communication network and “message”
blocks.
JMDC1997 7

ARPANet | Oct. 25, 1969
• The first ARPANet link was made on October 25,
1969, between the University of California and the
Stanford Research Institute.

• ARPANet delivered its first message, the supposed

message was “LOGIN” but the ARPA network
crashed

• The computer in Stanford only received the first

two letters of the message.

ARPANet | Oct. 25, 1969

• So by the end of the 1970’s, computer scientist

Vinton Cerf solved this problem when he
developed a way for all the computers on mini-
networks all over the world to communicate with
one another.

• He called this invention “Transmission Control

Protocol” (TCP)

Network
THE INTERNET
• The Internet quickly transformed a
nationwide infrastructure network
in US to an international
phenomenon.
• Other countries started to create
their own networks and bring
Internet within their boundaries.

INTERNET IN THE
PHILIPPINES

• In 1990, a committee led by Arnie

del Rosario of the Ateneo
Computer Technology Center was
tasked with exploring the
possibility of creating an academic
network composed of universities
and government network agencies
by the National Computer Center.

INTERNET IN THE PHILIPPINES

• Between 1991 and 1993, email gateways and services

were introduced in the Philippines. Some multinational
companies used a direct Internet connections.

• Some local firms also operated commercial X.25

networks.

• Another milestone to consider then was the

introduction of local and international emails to
FidoNet users.

INTERNET IN THE PHILIPPINES

• In June 1993, with the support from the Department

of Science and Technology and the Industrial
Research Foundation, the PhilNet was born.

• The PhilNet Technical Committee, comprised of

computer experts and representatives from DOST,
Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University,
University of the Philippines-Diliman, and
University of the Philippines-Los Baños.

• These entities played significant role in connecting

the Philippines to the Internet and the Word Wide
Web. PhilNet was later named as PHNet.

• A month after, Philnet project went full gear after

receiving funding from the DOST.

• The first phase was successful after students from

partner universities were able to send emails to the
Internet by routing them through the Philnet
gateways at the Ateneo University of Technology in
Australia.

• Towards the end of the year,

additional funding for the first
year’s cost was awarded by the
DOST to purchase equipment and
lease communication lines
needed to star with the second
phase of Philnet led by Dr. Rudy
Villarica.

INTERNER IN
THE PHILIPPINES
• Officially, Internet began in the
Philippines on March 29, 1994 when
the Philippine Network Foundation
(PHNet) connected the country to
Sprint in the United States via 64-
kbit/s link.

INTERNET IN THE PHILIPPINES

• Benjie Tan established the Philippines first

connection to the Internet at a PLDT network center
in Makati City.

JMDC1997 19
FR

BENJIE TAN
• He was working for ComNet, a
company that supplied Cisco
routers to the Philnet project.
• He immediately posted a short
message to the Usenet
newsgroup soc.culture.filipino
to alert Filipinos overseas that a
link had been made.
JMDC1997 20
FR
INTERNET IN THE PHILIPPINES
• There was a two-day delay due to “slight technical
difficulties”

• Hours after Tan’s message, Dr. John Burle from

Syracuse University announced at The First
International Email Conference at the University of
San Carlos in Cebu that the Philippines was able to
connect to the Internet successfully.
