2
INTRODUCTION
 The creation of greater
than human intelligence.
 The recursive self-
improvement in said
intelligence.
 A point at which our
predictions about the
future break down.

3
Why is the Singularity important?
 A major paradigm shift for humanity
 Raises, and potentially will answer,
questions about consciousness and
intellect
 Magic:
– “Any sufficiently advanced technology is
indistinguishable from magic.” - Arthur C. Clarke
 Ensure/Assist our survival against
existential risks.
4
Signs of Singularity
 The AI scenario.
 The IA scenario.
 Biomedical Scenario.
 Internet Scenario.
 Digital Gaia Scenario.

5
Consciousness Corundum
 Brain the most complex system.
 Electrode based ‘neural prosthesis’ to
help people with nervous system
disorders.
 Brain has a messy wiring diagram
where neurons resemble transistors.
 Neurons absorb, process and reemit
the electrochemical pulse action
potential.
6
Consciousness Corundum(ctd)..
 Action potential serve as the brains basic
unit of information.
 They take shape of spikes in
Oscilloscopes.
 Assumption that Brain performs 10
quadrillion operations per second.
 IBM’s Blue Gene 3 quadrillion operations
per second.

7
Artificial General Intelligence

Referred to as human level artificial intelligence.

Best/safest bet?

Merging with machines already happened like:
1) Robotic prosthesis.
2)Retina microchips.

and if they fail, Google has AI on their project
planner in the distant future at 2030.

8
Nanotech Rapture.
 By molecular nanotechnology we can :
 1)End scarcity.
 2)Eradicate Death.
 3)Eliminate bungled mechanisms that
eliminate body imperfections.
 Complex nano assembly is possible.
 Computer Engineers developed a
molecular machine to do parallel
processing.
9
Reverse Engineering the Brain.

Invented a new sophisticated electron
microscope that images at 10 billion pixels
per second.

Drosophilia melanogaster(fruit fly) being
reverse engineered now.

Process same as reverse engineering a
microprocessor.

10
Procedures in Reverse
Engineering.
 Machine called “deli-slicer” shaves 50 nm
slices of top of the brain.
 Using electron microscope images of
electron microscope are taken.
 Images are stacked carefully to form a 3-D
image.
 At last a wiring diagram of Brain is
obtained i.e. the map of consciousness.

11
Problems
 Interface problems.
 Can an intelligent entity design a more
intelligent entity?
 Is there some inherent limit to intelligence?
 Current inability to ensure a safe
singularity.

12
When might it happen?
 Dependent on so many things, but let's use
the wisdom of scientists:

13
Conclusions
 The Singularity, whether it eventuates or
not, has the potential to cause tremendous
good, but also the potential to result in
great harm. Thus it is worth thinking about
now, while we still have the ability to
influence the direction it proceeds in.
 We are in for interesting times…
