Typical Definition of Concrete …
1. Water Proof Concrete
• Function
• Manufacturing
Benefits Of Waterproof Concrete
• Quick and easy to lay
• Cost effective to use
• Less risk of cracking
• Easy to maintain
• Better for the environment
Applications
• Basements
• Underground Car Parks
• Swimming Pools
• Aquariums And Aquatic Centres
• Retail Storage
• Waterside Buildings
How It Works ?
2. Shotcrete
Contd..
• Function
• Manufacturing
Method of Application
Dry Mix And Wet Mix Shotcrete
Dry Mix (Aka Gunite) Wet Mix
Benefits of shotcrete
• Ability to access restricted space( e.g. Heavy Reinforcement Areas)
• Formwork savings
• Better bonding to the substrate, which enhances durability
• construction speeding
Applications
• Ground Swimming Pool Installation
• Customization In Shape, Depth And Style
• Mining And Tunneling
3. Roller Compacted Concrete (ACI 207.5R89)
Contd..
• Function :Strength and
Heat Control
• Manufacturing : low
cement content, Fly Ash,
larger aggregate
size(usually 3”) and a
suitable water content
Benefits of RCC
• Reduce Cement Consumption
• Omission of Cracks development chances in Dam
• Higher Rate Of Placement
• It can be used as a roadway after only 24 hours of being placed
• Lower Postcooling And Formwork Costs
• No concerns about high heat release
Method of Application
Applications
• Roads
• Highway shoulders
• Parking facilities
• Warehouses
• Ports
• Multimodal yards
• Distribution centers
• Dams
4. Self Compacting Concrete
Contd..
• Functioning
• Manufacturing
Limited Aggregate Content
Use of superplasticizers
Low waterpowder ratio
Use of VRA (Viscosity Reduction Agents)
Benefits of SCC
• To shorten construction period
• Congested Reinforcement
• To assure compaction
• To eliminate noise due to vibration
Applications of SCC
• Bridges
• Box Culverts
• Concrete filled steel columns
• Tunnels
• Dams
Method of Application
5. Green Concrete (aka Geopolymer concrete)
Contd..
• Functioning
• Manufacturing
Green Concrete has nothing to do with its colour. It is called so because of environment
friendly behavior.
Benefits of Green Concrete
• Environment Friendly
• Durable
• Waste Material Used
• Reduces Energy Consumption
• More resistant to temperature changes..
• Reduces CO2 Emissions
6. Light Weight Concrete
(Aka aircrete, foamed concrete, foamcrete, cellular lightweight
concrete or reduced density concrete)
Contd..
• Functioning
Normal weight concrete density = 140 150 lb/ft³
Light weight concrete density = 90 115 lb/ft³
• Manufacturing
Classification of Lightweight Concrete
• Lightweight Aggregate Concrete
• Aerated, Cellular, Foamed Or Gas Concrete
• Nofines Concrete
Benefits of LWC
• Reduced Dead Load Of Wet Concrete
• Cost Effective
• Soundabsorbing
• Low Thermal Conductivity
• Reduce Dead Load
• Slimmer Dimension Building Parts
Applications of LWC
• Precast Blocks
• Precast Wall Elements / Panels
• Castinsitu / Castinplace Walls
• Insulating Compensation Laying
• Insulation Floor Screeds
• Insulation Roof Screeds
• Sunken Portion Filling
• Trench Reinstatement
• Subbase In Highways
• Filling Of Hollow Blocks
• Prefabricated Insulation Boards
Superplasticizers (High Range Water Reducers)
Contd..
• Admixtures are Ingredients in concrete other than Portland cement, water, and
aggregate that are added to the mix immediately before or during mixing.
• Superplasticizer is one of the Admixtures.
• Developed in Japan and Germany in 1960s and 1970s.
• Chemically different from normal plasticizers.
Gaining workability without losing strength
Difference b/w Plasticizer and Superplasticizer
Plasticizer Superplasticizer
• Water reducer • High range water reducer
• Added 0.1 – 0.5% by weight of cement • Added 0.5 – 3% by weight of cement
• Can reduce the need for water by • Can reduce the need for water by
515% 30%
• Plasticizers are usually based on • The commonly used Super Plasticizers
lignosulphonate, which is a natural are SMF, SNF, PCE
polymer
Chemistry of Superplasticizer
Chemistry of Superplasticizers
• Naturally, Cement particles in concrete are drawn towards each other when mixed
with water.
• To increase the workability, these particles must be dispersed
• For this purpose, a dispersant additives (aka superplasticizers) are used.
• These are molecules which physically separate the cement particles .
• These molecules Temporarily neutralizes the Forces of Attraction between cement
particles giving concrete much more workability.
