INTRODUCTION
Night Vision Technology, by definition, allows
one to see in the dark.
To understand night vision, it is important to understand about
light..

NEAR-INFRARED
MID-INFRARED
THERMAL-INFRARED
WORKING OF NIGHT VISION
DEPENDING ON TECHNOLOGY:

IMAGE ENHANCEMENT: Using lower portion of

infrared light spectrum.

THERMAL IMAGING: Using upper portion of infrared

light spectrum
HOW DOES THERMAL IMAGING
WORK????????

Components used in thermal imaging are as follows:

Its quite easy to see ..but at night, you can
everything during the day. see very little.

Thermal imaging lets you see

again.
TYPES OF THERMAL IMAGING DEVICES..

•UN-COOLED: The unit operates at

room temperature.

•CRYOGENICALLY COOLED: The unit

kept at a temperature below 32 deg. F.
THEN WHAT ABOUT IMAGE ENHANCEMENT?
Why do NV devices always show images in
hues of green?

The screen was purposefully colored

green due to the scientific fact that the
human eye can differentiate more
shades of green than any other color.
GENERATIONS OF NIGHT VISION
PRODUCTS
There are 5 generations of night vision products. They are as follows:

GENERATION 0: Night vision products developed in early 1950’s.

GENERATION1:Advanced devices produced in 1960’s.
GENERATION 2:Introduction of MCP in 1970’s.
GENERATION3:Newer versions of MCPs were developed in late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
GENERATION4:Extended part of GEN3 forms this generation.

GENERATION-0
The earliest night vision products were based on image conversion rather than image
intensification. They required a source of invisible IR light mounted near or on the device
to illuminate the target area.
GENERATION-1
They have 3 image intensifier tubes connected in series.

A gain of 10,000 was obtained in this generation.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NIGHT
VISION
A.Textures, light and dark :

B. Fog and rain :

C. Black spots :
EQUIPMENT AND APPLICATIONS
Night –Vision equipment can be split into three broad categories:-

 Scopes
 GOGGLES
 CAMERAS
APPLICATIONS
Common applications for night vision include

• Military
• Hunting
• Wildlife observation
• Security
• Hidden object detection
• Entertainment
