JetBlue’s decision to add E190 to its fleet. Agree?

• E190 has seating capacity of 100 serving medium and short haul routes.
• JetBlue has a fleet of 23 such aircrafts by the end of 2006
• Operated by cost per available seat mile(CASM), 12% > A320 carrier and 34% < typical RJ(Regional Jet)
• Launch customer which made them design interior for more customer comfort

Advantages Disadvantages
• Increased costs as E190 spent more time on ground than A320
• New market opportunities, increased range of choices
• Change in pilot compensation and disadvantage in accumulating
• Synergy of connecting flights between A320 and E190
flying hours, also training
increased utilization of A320 to 13.4hrs/day and E190 at
10-11hrs , where average RJ’s at 8hrs
• Requiring changes to airport infra(lower height)
• Utilization of exiting airport facilities
• Service level reduced (baggage issues, crew serving time less)
• Increased productivity and reduced downtime for crew
• Created additional operating complexity (engines, avionics,
members
servicing)
• Higher loads and increased economies for JetBlue
• Management view differentiated – standards of service and
reliability of JetBlue set in past created frustration of working by
integrating E190
