THEORETICAL STUDY
THEORETICAL STUDY

Water flooding is the most widely applied method for

recovering oil from reservoirs.
THEORETICAL STUDY
- The salinity and ion composition of the injection
water in the past have not been considered as a
key parameter in oil recovery from waterflooded
reservoirs.
- In recent years, evidence from laboratory studies
verified by some field test mainly targeting
sandstones has shown that injecting low salinity
water has a significant impact on oil recovery.
THEORETICAL STUDY
- Smart Water injection is an EOR technique that
is both environmentally friendly and easily
implementable to a fractional cost compared to
other water-based EOR methods.
- EOR by Smart Water is a wettability alteration
process towards more water-wet conditions,
which induces increased positive capillary forces
and increased microscopic sweep efficiency.
THEORETICAL STUDY
- Therefore the term “Smart Water” is used for a
brine that is able to alter rock wettability for
increased oil recovery.
- The composition of the Smart Water brine is not
fixed, but may vary for the individual reservoir
rocks.

INNOVATION
PAPER INNOVATION
- This paper examines the economic feasibility of
the injection of smart water and optimization
has also been done with different dilution
schemes.
- Five main parameters are optimized such as
number of cycles of different salinities, duration
of various cycles, salinity value for different
cycles, injection rate and production rate.
- This outcome illustrates that increased oil
recovery is not only dependent on step wise
reduction of sea water salinity but also with the
variation of dilution pattern.
TEAM INNOVATION
- Some active ionic (Ca2+, Mg2+, So42-) can alter
wettability especially in carbonate reservoir
(S. Jafar, 2012). We can optimize Smart Water
not only by salinity value different but also
increase active ionic.
- NaCl decrease oil recovery (S. Jafar, 2012). We
can also optimize Smart Water by decrease NaCl
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
- The increase in oil recovery dependent on
dilution sequence.
- Injection of low salinity water alters the rock
wettability that cause an additional oil recovery.
- Injection of smart water is feasible and
economical as shown in this study.
- Optimization of sequential dilution is necessary
to get maximum profit
