Intro to basic tools


Don’t Choose Fractional Sizes
• Nearly everything
using metric sizes
• Leave the fractional
(SAE, English (1/2”)
sockets and
wrenches for last
resort
Wrenches

• Used to install and remove nuts and bolts


• Available in both conventional (inch) and
metric (millimeter) sizes
– Size is stamped on the side of the wrench
Wrench Use
• Only use the box end to
loosen or tighten
• Never use the open end
• Open end will slip and
strip
• Push away instead of
pulling toward yourself
Why is my wrench bent?
Socket Terms
• Drive Size
– Size of the square
opening for the
handle
– Common drive sizes
are 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”,
and 3/4”
Ratchet Drive Size

• Points
– Configuration of
the box for the
bolt head
– 4-point, 6-point,
8-point, and 12-
point are
available
Righty Tighty and Lefty Loosey
Clockwise Counter-clockwise
Tightening and Loosening
• From the perspective of looking at the head of
a bolt or a nut
– Clockwise to tighten
– Counterclockwise to loosen
Screwdrivers
• Tool kit has standard (flat) and Phillips
• Short
• Medium
• Long
• Phillips #1, #2, and #3
• NOT a chisel, punch, or pry bar
Pliers
• Used to grip, cut, crimp, hold, and bend
various parts
• Never use pliers when another type tool
will work
• Pliers can nick and scar a part

Hammers
• Ball Peen hammer
• Ball peen used for metal
working/shaping
• Ask before beating
anything with a
hammer – seriously
