Elements
● A pure substance that is made from a single type of atom
● Building blocks for all the rest of the matter in the world
● An important number in an element is the atomic number.
Atomic Number
● The number of protons in each atom
● Each element has a unique atomic number.
Periodic Table
● A system for arranging the elements by their atomic number
The periodic table is separated into 4 sections.

Valence Electrons
Valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost energy level of an
atom — in the energy level that is farthest away from the nucleus.

● Can be lost, gained or shared

● Participate in the formation of chemical bonds
Only s and p have valence electrons!
How do you draw electron dot diagrams?
Lewis Dot Structure/Electron Dot Diagram

● A simplistic way of showing the reactive electrons of an

atom
● Each dot represents one electron
Example

C
Carbon: 4 Valence Electrons
N
Nitrogen: 5 Valence Electrons
Your Turn!

O
Oxygen: ____ Valence Electrons
F
Fluorine: ____ Valence Electrons
What is a valence
electron? How do we
use them to draw
Electron Dot Diagrams?
