    You are an insect city planner in
    charge of designing the most
    populated fruit fly city in the
    world! Like all great cities, yours
    will be built upon food: a ripe
    banana
    The total number of LIVING ADULT
    fruit flies in your “city” (jar) will be
    counted in class on the last day (end of
    Materials: 2 weeks) by the teacher. Keep a
    written record of how many adult flies
    are in your jar each day before then.
    • 1 jar (your “city”)
    Your “city” will stay in the classroom,
    • A ripe banana but you can decide where you want to
    • A crumpled up paper place it within the classroom
    • An absorbent cotton ball
    • A magnifying glass
    HINTS:
    • Any other materials
    you’d like to place in or 1) How do you know which fruit flies
    around the jar are adults? Do all adults look the
    same or can they look different?
    2) Where will you “settle” your city?
    Do you think there’s an ideal spot?
    3) What do you think will help the
    fruit flies reproduce? How many
    generations of flies do you think
    there will be by the end?
